Hi guys.
I want to start a thematic mini-tournament with the queen's gambit.
Anybody who wants to play?
First come, first serve.

Please check if you don't have too many mini-tournaments/games going on.

Which line of the Queen's Gambit? Are you just going with 1. d4 d5 2. c4 and leaving the decision up to the players, because there are a lot of different variations to choose from including the slav/semi-slav, QG Accepted, and Tarrasch Defense along with numerous QG Declined lines. So you might consider narrowing it down a little, unless you are specifically going for the broad overview. Also, what will the time controls be and what are the rating limits?

antagonistknight
I leave it up to the players which variation they will choose, unless you have a better idea, I'm always open to ideas.
No rating limits

Then I am interested in joining, it will be interesting to see what variations everyone chooses. As for me it will be the Slav Defense.

I am so tempted...
.... but, no. I will be very interested in the Slav defence games of antagonistknight. It's a line that I've tried a couple of times on GK and I want to know more about it. The line gives the impression of leading to quite exciting sort of games.

Q's Gambit
Count me in...I play this line at times and there are so many variations!

I don't have an opening with white in which I truly feel comfortable. I've never played Queen's gambit. My game count is down and I'm winding down a couple of tourney's. Please include me in this tourney.

MT
Regarding the lines of play, what you could suggest is that for 5 games, play the Q gambit accepted and for the other 5 or so, play Q gambit declined and then we can see how players did with each line of play and maybe even eval the games.

Thoughts?

Re : MT
I really like your idea Andy. We could do it so that for example you against me
when I'm white I play accepted and when you're white, you play declined?

andy
I see the value of your idea. However, I'd like to not commit to that definitively. I literally have no experience with the Q gambit. I've started doing some reading into it to prepare myself accordingly. I'm not sure which way, if either, I will feel comfortable and I don't want to lock myself into anything. Moreover, if I play a higher rated player later in the tourney, I will more likely want to play the way I'm most comfortable rather than having to change it up.

That....
...is also true.
I think it is best to leave the decision up to everybody, then we can't get any confusion.
Okay?

?????
will this be a QG thematic tournament or not?
antagonistknight
13-Feb-10, 08:22

Yes it is a QG thematic tournament they are just making suggestions on how to continue after the initial setup of 1. d4 d5 2. c4, their suggestions were geared towards those that wanted to try the multiple different setups. You can play their way or you can select your own favored line as I will be doing with the Slav Defense when I play with the black pieces.

antagonistknight is right
The MT will just be 1. d4 d5 2.c4

MT
After the 1st 3 moves, the play must be either accept or decline....there's not much more of a decision is there? So all I am suggesting is that half the players play one line and the half the other line and maybe we can all learn something from how the games proceed from there.

andy
I think we should just leave the decision to everybody itself, because it will be half accepted half declined (approximately)

To steve and the others :)
In my opinion you all should be familiar with the queens gambit basic lines
It is one of the oldest know chess openings and it is a very good opening.

There are a some very good traps and some fine variation to explore. And specially wen you play OTB games now and then it is a must know opening that will give you great winning prospects.

I give you a few links under-need from the wiki pages that are easy to understand and give you a good start. ( I recommend also to use those wiki pages or a opening book as your reference for your games here instead of the GK/world databases < do not even look at those it will give you a better understanding.)

Fine w/ me...I was offering a suggestion. I like to see what a number of players do w/ each variation and hope not to see most go w/ one variation such as the slav or accepted. I like variability. Let's get some more sign-ups and get the Q gambit started...it is a must opening to know and defend against.
