Tournament VI - Open Tourney Signup
As stated in the "Tournament VI " thread, the Open Tourney is for members whose rating falls any range. The tourney's theme will be the "Reti Opening." See the following thread to find out more:

en.wikipedia.org

If you are interested in signing up for this tourney, please do so in this thread. Invitations will be made on a first come, first serve basis. If enough members whose rating falls in this tourney's range, another group(s) may be initiated.

Unless the majority of participants for this tourney request otherwise, the time control for the Open Tourney will be 5 days + 2 days < 7 days.

Please note: As opposed to the other 5 tourneys, no points will be awarded for the Open Tourney. This is because there is no rating range limit.

The tourney is scheduled to commence August 15. Good luck and enjoy.

points awarded and rating
dumb question: Jim, am struggling to understand "points awarded" (for instance in the masters" tourney) and "no points awarded" (Open Tourney).
Fun either way, but how does playing in this tournament affect one's overall rating?

===thank you==

points awarded and rating, asking again
Then I guess my question is the same, Jim, but now it's Dumber since I just read that Greek/Byzantine/Minoan labyrinth of mini-trounament regulations:

How does playing in this mini-tournament -- in the open tourney, in the masters' tourney -- affect one's overall rating?

shamash
you just play against other players and the win or loss affects your overall rating.

points awarded compared with points not awarded (and ratings?)
well Ardin then maybe You can explain -- what is the difference between playing in a tourney where "points are awarded" and playing in the open tourney where points are Not awarded?

Mini Tournament Points
Most mini tournaments are limited to a certain range of ratings; for example, 1200 to 1600 points. In these tourneys, points are awarded according to tthe number of participants and the stading of the finishing player; for example, first place, second place, third place, etc.

The Open Tourney is an exception as it is open to any rating range. As such, no mini tournament points will be awarded to anybody regardless of their placement upon completion of the tourney.

Mini Tournament Points vs. overall rating
Hi Shamash, I think I can answer your question, in case you are still uncertain.

The games you play in any of the mini tournaments will affect your rating just the same as if it were any other game (a team game for example).

The difference when playing in a mini tournament is that you can also gain "mini tournament points" depending on how well you placed in that tournament. These points are completely independent of your overall rating. Some tournaments award points, some do not.

If you click on "Tournaments" in the sidebar then click on "open mini-tournaments" you will see a table of the public mini tournaments that are available to join. If you want to understand better about how the mini tournament points work, you should take a look there.

I hope this helps.

Steve, thank you, a great light has dawned, you've ended my confusing "rating points" with "mini tournament points."
You, I would enjoy meeting ovr a chessboard, you must play very logical chess. As someone who relies onthe Caro-Kann a lot, am intrigued by your quote of Shternshain, wonder what that is from? Thanks again.

Time controls...
I note that the time control for this MT is a little more leisurely than that for the Masters. At that there was some dispute as to what the control ought to be, in the latter at least.

I don't think one will satisfy everyone, but it seems to me that faster players are more likely to accept a slow time control than slower players a fast one. I wonder if a kind of middle -of-the-road TC ought to have been chosen for all MTs, something like 4+1<6 or 4+2<7, take it or leave it? Everyone has a preference, but the must a point at which a compromise is possible.

I am prepared to accept a TC of 3+2<5 but would have preferred the TC for this tournament in the masters. Owing to 2 withdrawals I am wondering indeed if the Masters will go ahead.

. . .
Time controls in this tournament have resulted in more disputes than with any prior ones for some reason. Unless the majority of members insist otherwise, I stick with 3+2<5. However, this time around nobody seems to be happy with the controls.

Only the Minor and Intermediate tourneys and possibly the Open one have enough participants to take place. Like I just relayed to brigadecommander, I think I may be offering too many tournaments per year. I've been offering 3, I think next year I will try just 2. Do you have any thoughts on this?

One more tourney participant
Now that chingachkook has indicated interest in this tourney, the minimum number of participants has been reached. On the 25th I will kick off the Open Tourney as I need to give those whose tourneys could not meet a chance to play this one.

Thus far, the following members have signed up for this tourney:
