Game of the Month Thread #3
Many of our members have volunteered to fill the role of new judges for the Game of the Month contests.

Thus far, the judge rotation is as follows:

pawnstar2010 (lead judge)
brigadecommander (lead judge)
charleshiggie
scccadams
andywm
rookie879
a_random_guy
hityerclock

Other members may volunteer for the judging role by sending me a private message for verification. A qualifying member must have a minimum rating of 1500.

Two judges will assist with the process each month including one lead judge at least until the other judges feel comfortable with the process.

Game of the Month Rules
1) Each player may submit 1 of their games per month. He does not have to submit a game if he does not want to, but no more than one game per person please!

2) You must post a LINK to the annotated game as a reply in this message thread.

3) Players entering their games must belong to this club - that's obvious

4) The game does not have to be an actual "club game" - any game that has been played ON GAMEKNOT by the player entering will be eligible (blitz games excluded because you cannot link them).

5) The deadline for all games to be judged for each month is the LAST DAY of the month - for example, the deadline for games being entered in the June Game of the Month will be the 30th June.

6) The game must have ended in the month you are entering it.

7) Judges cannot enter a game for the GotM competition during the month they are a judge.

If you have questions/concerns, feel free to post and a judge will help you.

Judging Criteria
This is the judging criteria as originally posted by easy19, and confirmed by the moderators as the general guidelines for judging the games.

From easy19:
I myself was thinking for the games I will look at to give a score for
- Opening
- Mid game
- Endgame
- Mating
- Tactics
- Positional and Piece coordination
( Max 60 points for the total game overview)

- and Penalty scores for (minus 2 points p/event with a max of 10 events) -20 max
- overlooking a mate
- overlooking decisive moves
- Massive Blunders
- Resignation

- Extra bonus point score for (plus 2 points p/event and a max of 10 events) +20 max
- Sacrifices (sound sacrifices)
- High Draw or Win
- Making decisive moves
- Cool combinations and exchanges

I will only look from the perspective of the player who has send in the game
Final Score Max 60 points for the game total game overview minus penalty and plus bonus divided by 8

The (two) judges' scores will be added together for each game and then be divided by (2) to get each games final score.

A Third Lead Judge
I am happy to say that we now have a third lead judge who wishes to once again participate in this process. kendo-ka has graciously accepted the role as one of the club's seasoned judges. Now let's see if we can re-kindle an interest in the montly GOTM contests.

Please submit games!!!
To all club members; please take the time and submit your best games. They will be
systematically studied and gone over backwards and forwards. If we all pay attention to these
games we all benefit. We are creating our own Database as we do so.. So come on and submit
them!!!....BC
p.s; i will ask the founder and moderators if we can submit games as far back as three months.I
know at times i had a good game that i wanted to submit but it was finished in the wrong month.

Games from which month?
According to the rules, a player may only submit one game per month. But the game has to end in the month being submitted. This is a bit problematic, since we won't always know if a particularly good game is going to end by the end of month. So do we wait in the hope that it does, or do we submit an earlier game, but then miss the chance to submit the better one if it ends earlier than expected?

It would make more sense to submit games in month "N" that ended in month "N - 1" (for for November, submit games that ended in October). That way we can actually pick what we consider to be our best game of the month.

Rules are meant to be changed if needed.
Please explain to me what is wrong with submitting older games??. One per person. As long as
they was played on
Gameknot whats the problem??. Maybe this will generate more interest in this thread. Rules can
be changed. Better to continue GOTM then stop doing it because of lack of participation.

hmm
It is game of the month not best game of the past...

if we start sending in games of other months or even years the title game of the month is not longer covering the load.

The idea behind Game of the month is that at the end of the year we take the winners of the games of the month competition and make it a game of the year contest..

Why not submit games of the month before. well that could be done but the reason that it is not done is because most games are just taking longer then 1 month to be played out.. and the game of the month thread officially closes 10 days into the next month so there is plenty of time to submit.. the game of the month that ended 30 November but you also can directly submit your game that ended on 2 December

I haven't been submitting because I kind of felt bad for making people do the work   Plus I wonder if stronger players will take anything from my games, but I guess players around my rating will.

Here is mine for November. My opponent was a little stronger, I felt I faltered around move 17, but my opponent made a couple of errors and I got the win in the end.

game

I haven't annoted the game yet, quite busy. If I can I will post the annotated version.

Change in GOTM Rules
Thank you, brigadecommander, for drumming up ideas on how to revamp the GOTM contests. I tend to side with hityerclock and easy19. I believe the "Game of the Month" should cover a single month. I also like their suggestion that one month be judged in the succeeding month. That means November's games should be judged in December.

Question/Comment
Approx how many GOM are submitted each month?
I may be missing something, and correct me if I am wrong, but it doesn't matter when the game was started, only when finished and then it gets submiited for the month it was completed. Rules can be changed if necessary but I don't see an issue here.

My thoughts...
andywm, I think it is usually around 5 - 8 games per month that are submitted.

Here is my understanding of how the rules are at the moment.

It doesn't matter when a game started, only the month when it finished.

Games must be submitted before the 10th of the month (Games finishing in November for example are to be submitted before 10th of December).

My opinion (and it is only my opinion) is that this works fine as it is. At the end of the month you have 10 days to choose the best of your games to submit. I wonder if the rules just need to be clarified rather than revamped.

That said, I would support any changes that refresh club member's interest in this very worthwhile exercise. I would also encourage more members to put their hand up to assist with the judging. It is a very effective way to learn more about the game.

The time submission rule shall remain
I was unaware of that a game completed in one month could be submitted as late as the 10th of the succeeding one. I agree with pawnstar2010, the rule should remain as it is now. I will change my notes to reflect the same.

My entry for this month
I had many great games this month, it is a shame I can't put them all...
I also have yielded excellent results in the new traxler mini-tournament, outplaying a few 1900 rated players.

Anyway, I'll show this one:
game
I virtually made no mistake against a higher rated opponent and won.

My entry for November
Like Etienne, I have had a good month, and have done well in the traxler mini-tournament.

The game I am submitting is a high draw for me - A real tactical battle that ended up in a Queen vs. 2 Rooks endgame. I hope you guys enjoy looking over it as much as I enjoyed playing it. I haven't finished the annotation yet, but I will post it in the next few days hopefully.

Also following in Etienne's footsteps if you have some time to lose here's another couple to look at:

My game for the month

Not a game i won but a Game i lost..

and i lost using one of my pet lines ( alekhine defence ) a line i only lost once with so this is the second time... there was a draw option mid game but i only saw it afterwards...

I used a lot of second best moves to get into a draw position at the end but Rainer is a to formidable opponent.
