along with andywm i am a judge for the June GOTM...As soon as he contacts me we will begin
evaluating the entries.

Change GOTM
I want to change my GOTM entry for July to this one:
game

I make an interesting speculative sac in the middlegame, which is proved to be sound by the GK analysis. When we both make a mistake (with White missing a perpetual check) I get a won ending which I convert into a win.

june GOTM winners.
sorry for the delay.I could have posted the results two weeks ago but did't. This was a very
hard selection to make. All 4-games were in my opinion were excellent!

4th place(but still a wonderful game) goes to 'riceant' for his sharp positional game. A really
fine game! and a good example of how to play this Opening.

3rd place; goes to 'charleshiggie';as usual another effort that in many ways reminds me of the
way B.Spasski played! as both tactics and strategy blend together in one harmonious whole!!
17.Ng5!! and 2.BXf7!! both very pretty moves and illustrative of Charles style.

2nd place goes to a_random_guy.; here we have a marvelous king hunt,a huge struggle that
must have been so much fun to play.i really enjoyed replaying this game..a rare game..my
compliments

1st place goes to''rookie879''. I awarded this player and game first place for simple reasons. As
a example of the opening it was played dynamically. It is a wonderful example of positional
chess. It is Beautifully straightforward in its conception and 'execution'. This player will go
far!!. thank you all for participating.I was very proud to Judge such fine games....Janet

March,April,and May GOTM
There seems to be a backlog of games to be Judged. If the Judges are too busy I can have
these games Judged in three days if you all wish. But perhaps my style of Judging is not for
everyone so i;ll leave it up to the players concerned. I look at the games carefully.I don't nit-
pick and try to find mistakes because everyone makes mistakes. I look at it like a Battle
underway. A infantry action here,a Tank-thrust there,a trap over there!! A plan well executed,
etc...BC/ PS...july and august i can't

Wow... I'm speechless

It's an honor to win this award when there were so many great games...

And that's the most praise I've ever heard from a player like you

That was good company you were in, too - June seemed very productive of fine games: a worthy award.

April GOTM results.
andywm told me he already had the results finished for March and they will be posted soon.
so here are the results for April. Again i had to make some hard choices.

5th place; go's to J.Stevens for her Draw with Dave. She showed great poise and coolness in
this game. Her Opponent is one tough customer.Given blacks handling of the Zaitsev its is
remarkable that she found her way through very complicated play.

4th place;goes to vocihc, here we have very aggressive handling of the black pieces!! almost
like he was determined from the outset 'it will be war'.Very nice game.

3rd place; goes to i-d-j. A beautiful short game with a very pretty combo!!! this games shows
the perils of being black and carefree in a Kings gambit.

2nd place;goes to sonata296 for his very fine positional win. I need not say more. The game
speaks for itself.

1st place; is awarded to 'riceant' for his wonderful handling of a Kings Indian. This is how one
plays this aggressive Opening. He took every advantage he could find. This is a very well
played game, and from my standpoint the best. May results tomorrow.

The very long awaited resulsts for March...
Firstly let me apologise to the club for these results being so late!

The games were very tight and it was very difficult for judges to pick one over another.
The judges results have been tallied up, and here is the final outcome:

Winner: riceant

2nd place: sonata296
game

3rd place: l-d-j
game

Congratulations to the winners, and thanks to all who entered - there were some particularly entertaining games!

only two submissions for May
i could only find two entries for May.One by Jo Stevens and one by riceant. With advice from
Ion i have decided to award 1st place to both players as i agree 100% with this analysis by
Ion.

From ionadowman
Hello, brigadecommander,
Two by my count: Jo Stevens (submitted 20 May) and id-riceant (submitted 4 June).

Jo's game was a good, solid draw against a strong opponent. Jo has annotated it. There is an
interesting point during its course that I use in the comments section to show what a
difference a single pawn move can make, in which Black might have obtained a 'zugzwang'
position - or at least the potential to create one. It seems to me a good candidate for
discussion in the WtW Club endgame thread.

The other is a good, solid defence and counterattack against an Albin Counter-Gambit. riceant
outplayed his opponent in the ending.

Of course, two entries do not a competition make. I would have suggested that where entries
are fewer than some specified minimum for the month, then they get held over (with some sort
of notification in the thread and by private message). But I think the June GotM has been
judged. So maybe we have to settle for congratulating the two on their entries, and simply
announce to the club at large that there were too few entries for May. Sound reasonable?

GotM August
I very much like this game:
game
Although my opponent made a few mistakes, I think I played it very well (the computer says I didn't make any mistakes). The funny thing is, I win material two times in this game, and in both cases by a double pawn push (first g2-g4-g5, then f4-f5+-f6+). The position after Black's 26th is interesting for a mate in two puzzle and the mate is quite pretty. Enjoy.

By the way, when will the results of July be published?
ionadowman
22-Aug-11, 00:57

l-d-j...
... A bit one-sided: you outplayed your opponent almost from the first move. I like the repeated pawn fork motif. I checked out the tournament it's from, by the way. It has to be about the evenest tournament I've ever seen, especially considering that most games have been decisive. Extraordinary.
l-d-j
22-Aug-11, 01:06

Yes I know
It's indeed a bit one-sided.. But I couldn't help it   Maybe a game with chances for both sides would be a better candidate for GotM, but this is the best I have at the moment. And yes, it's a very interesting tourney! I can still reach first place, 12/20 would already be enough..
ionadowman
22-Aug-11, 14:39

...
Nothing wrong with one-sided... You are better placed than I have been until recently, without anything I felt could stand tall in a GotM gallery. But, at last, I do feel I might have something for August...

There might have been one game, with a most interesting rook ending, but the February earthquake put the kibosh on what would have been a fine win. I don't suppose there is an emoticon that gives a raspberry - a Bronx cheer - is there? Very disappointing, but couldn't be helped.

Cheers,
Ion

My entry for August 2011
This was a Team game that lasted 5 months; I had the White pieces. A King's Indian Four Pawns Attack led to some lively tactics in the early middlegame that netted me the Exchange for a pawn. The late middle game and ending was White's realisation of the slender material. In the face of Black's counterattacks, White had to give back the Exchange but that left Black's pieces poorly placed to help the rook hold back White's rampaging a-pawn.
