Ruy Lopez Opening
Although, my favorite opening is the Queens Gambit is my favorite opening, the Ruy Lopez Opening is my second favorite. This is because I am most familiar with the Ruy Lopez Opening. I learned it when I first entered the chess club near my area, where I volunteer and have stored this information about the opening for a long period of time, about two years.

Ruy Lopez
Joe;; yes this is a great Opening. Probably the best. But then you have to deal with that other
great Opening...The Sicilian. That is why i never ever play e4 as white. If someone plays 1.e4
against me i almost always play 1....e5. I love the black side of the Lopez(difficult as it is). But
playing against the Sicilian is not for me.

How to Handle the Siclian Defense
I do not mind playing against the Sicilian, but I used to have problems with this. Jack Stockel, told me how to handle the Sicilian Defense. When my opponent plays c5, in response to 1.e4, I play 2.Nf3. Then, if my opponent responds with d6, I play 3.d6.

This is called the Open Sicilian.

Joe...
I think the line you are describing is 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 - a typo in your posting (3.d6)
The Open Sicilian is a freewheeling sort of game for both sides, but unfortunately it is also steeped in theory.

At the level you are now playing at, though , I would recommend this sort of follow-up:
3.d4 cxd4 4.c3 ...

This is the Morra Gambit, the idea being that after 4...dxc3 5.Nxc3 you get your pieces out with lightning speed. With that, Black's game gets put under heavy pressure before he has properly developed.

Note that the usual continuation from White's 4th move is 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 after which Black chooses from among these: 5...g6 (Dragon Defence); 5...a6 (Najdorf defence); 5...e5 (Pelikan Defence) and even 5...Nc6, transposing into 2,,,Nc6 lines. You can see already there's a heck of a lot of theory among all that.

Reverting to the Morra Gambit, Here's the opening moves of a game played 50-odd years ago between Bobby Fischer 9White) and Viktor Korchnoi:

1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.c3 dxc3
5.Nxc3 Nc6 6.Bc4 e6 (6...a6 and 6...g6 are worth thinking about for Black)

7.0-0 a6?
Better are 7...Nge2 or ...Nf6.

8.Qe2 Nf6 9.Rd1 Qc7
And now, with 10.Bf4! White would have had a fine game.
