Q v 2 rooks
Hi everyone!

Which is best, do you think? Q v 2 rooks. I had 2 rooks against the Wicked Witch of the West (enemy queen) in the following game but lost spectacularly.

Could I have improved on this?

Her Majesty the Queen and her tolerance for 2 opposing rooks
Joanne, am sure you will get all kinds of concrete tactical advice about your particular game, so mine will be general, strategic, and appropriate for most Q v 2R endgames -- based on my experience and preferences.

I am in the minority because I prefer a Queen to 2 Rooks.

Having said that, a key for the side with the Queen is to keep the 2 rooks from working together.
Working together, they can operrate more powerfully as an attacking force than the Queen.

For defense, however, usually it is just not in the nature of a rook to defend well.

Attack, yes. Defend, no, not usually.

Therefore, the side with the rooks should aim to:

1) deploy the rooks on open ranks and files,

2) connect the rooks so they work as a team,

3) for guard duty, guard the first and second ranks (assuming that's where the King is sheltering),

4) the key to any successful rook in the endgame, as you know, is to keep the rook Active.

Jo, in the game in question, you needed to play more actively in the center before reaching that position. It appears that the best you could have done with the 2 rooks vs Q in the position you had after reaching that point was a draw, in part because the N was stronger than a bad B and your King was too open. By immediate consolidation and concentrating on defending what you had, I am confident you had a draw. I think that your 27th move was the problem.
