Re: Favorite openings!
To date my favorite opening sequence white/black:

1. e5 . . . e4
2. Nc3 . . . Nc6
3. Nf6 . . . Nf3
4 Bc5 . . . Bc4
5. O-O . . . O-O-O
6. d5 . . . d4
7. Bf4 . . . Bf5
Game on

Of course, it may not be possible to carry out this sequence of moves. Sometimes, your opponent "comes out of the shoot running" forcing you to play defensively right off the bat. Moreover, on occasion you are presented with an attacking advantage before you can castle. Finally, castling later than sooner may be necessary with opponents who are determined to prevent you from castling early in the game.

Favorite Openings
I always begin with 1. d4. Playing white, I always play regular (i.e. not "off beat") openings against whatever defense black chooses against 1. d4. With white, I particularly enjoy playing the against the Nimzo-Indian:

1. d4 Nf6
2. c4 e6
3. Nc3 Bb4

As black against e4, my favorite response is c6, Caro Kann. I have recently discovered the power of the Panov attack though, or at least to me it seems powerful as I seem to run into trouble as black playing the Caro Kann against the Panov attack. Also, when I am white against the Caro Kann I have been having success playing the Panov attack.

Caro-Kann, Panov attack:
1. e4,c6
2. d4,d5
3. exd5,cxd5
4. c4

As white, I am basically an e4 player. This sequence has came up lately in a lot of my games with me as white:
1. e4,e5
2. Nf3, Nc6

Now, I used to basically just play Bb3 next (Ruy Lopez) but this became kind of boring, especially with the seemingly extensive game DB availble for this opening. So, I have been playing two other openings here instead and I havn't decided which one I like better yet. They are the "Italian game" and the "Scotch game" I believe.

Italian game:
1. e4,e5
2. Nf3,Nc6
3. Bc4

Scotch game:
1. e4,e5
2. Nf3,Nc6
3. d4

Does anyone play either of the two above mentioned openings as white? If so, how do you like them?

Favorite Openings
I usually play trompowsky as white.
As black I play the KID against d4 and the Scandinavian against 1 e4.

Trompowsky
I was not familiar with what the Trompowsky was. So I looked it up.

1. d4,Nf6
2. Bg5

I have never played this as white. But I have encountered it as Black. I suppose one nice thing about it for sure is that it can avoid some other more known openings Black may choose to play.

Have you had a lot of success with the opening as white?

Yes and no
I've had some success. Unfortunately, lately a lot of players play

1 d4 e6 That forces me to play the french which I don't like one bit.

The tromp is good if you like to attack and are not afraid to sac pieces. Usually if the game is
under 40 moves I win. But if the game goes longer black has better chances.

Often you give up the dark squared bishop for a knight, damaging black's pawn structure.
Then you put your pawns on dark squares to make his dark bishop bad.

Basically then you want to mate him before the position opens up. The longer the game goes
on the more likely his bishop pair will become dangerous.

The tromp is used by GMs as a specialized weapon. I use it almost exclusively because I
don't have a lot of time to devote to chess. I am also a jazz guitarist and elementary school
teacher. I live in Korea and am studying Korean. So I'm really busy.

tromp
A good friend of mine also plays the tromp here on gameknot. He is about the same rating as
you. You might want to challenge him to a game.

Tell him I recommended it.

His name is jejudoug.

As white he'll play the tromp.
As black he'll play the french.

I have played him! Wow, I find it kind of cool you mentioned him. Yes, jejudoug is a great player. I have played two games with him. He joined one of my Mathematics Nerds tournaments some time ago.

I will message him asking him to join the club.

I find there is some good analysis on youtube. Because it is explained visually it is easier to understand and retain.
