Club vs. fatcat2After the success of the semi-consultation game between tekoahbaer and the rest of the Knights of Honour Chess Club, I have decided you to challenge you all to a game myself. This game shall be played, in correspondence, here in this thread. You should hopefully all know how to produce FEN notation after that last game gameknot.com - however, if you don't, it doesn't matter at all! I look forward to a good game. You can play White this time. You may talk over your ideas in this thread - I promise I will only look at your moves, not your thoughts! |

First moveThank you fatcat2 for the challenge. I really enjoyed and gleaned strategic planning from tekoahbaer's like challenge, and I am sure I will increase my skill with this one as well. Jim |

2. d4I would like to add despite what gameknot's spell checker thinks I know how to spell defence I'm British. |
|||||||||||||
|
2. d4Just to play the French Defense, as I have never really done, would be great. The last team I was on kept track of who voted for what so it was easier to keep track, not sure if you all would like to add in the extra second or two to do this or not. doji, kendo-ka, unwiredmind 2. d4 |

2...d5 game you started against me. My reply is 2...d5 The game, KoHCC vs fatcat2, now looks like this: I eagerly await your next move!!! P.S. In answer to your question, tennesseehiker, 2.Nc3 is a perfectly respectable option, as it develops a minor piece. However, 2.d4 is considered stronger, since it is much more flexible and can develop into any variation of the French Defence; 2.Nc3 can only really transpose into one French Defence variation. Also, your e-pawn is not under attack yet.I'm not going to show you the lines, since that might give you all clues!!!! Having said that, the stronger players probably know the theory already, and will tell you themselves. |

French Defence LinksThis offers a play-by-play analysis of a game that utilizers the French Defense. blog.chess.com This given insight into its history and various considerations thereof. I have found Wikipedia.com to offer comprehensive information on chess in general., its history, and various strategies and tactics. en.wikipedia.org This offers an excellent U-Tube expose' audio/video presentation of the French Defense over a multi-part series. I have found thiese lessons to be most informative. I highly recommed that everyone participating in this challenge review these lessons before going forward with this challenge. www.youtube.com |

Jim and kendo-kaIt is a choice here we have to make.... I, personally like the more open variation, exchange the pawns (3.exd4), because it will get us (and black too) ready for beautiful combinations. 3.e5, is the more closed, positionally game. It is also very playable. The difference in my opinion is that a closed position leads to a draw, if no-one makes a mistake of course. The open game gives many possibility's and the chances of a draw are smaller, because one player has to make a plan and try to see through the plan of the other. If, however, you two insist on playing 3.e5, 3.e5 it will be! I will wait a few hours for a reaction, then I post the move, so fatcat2, a little patience and you will know the outcome. Jo |

Move 3 change to exd4I will go along with your suggestion of exd4 as I don't want to end up in a draw. If you look at my profile, you will see that more than 5% of my 700+ games have ended in draws. This is partially because I have a soft spot for lower rated friends; however, a great number of my games actually conclude as draws. |

3. Nc3 or 3. e53. Nc3 preferred or 3.e5 acceptable |

DrawsIf we are going to go by statistics then looking at gameknots database I'd say playing the Paulsen Nc3 or playing the Tarrasch Nd2 is our best bet. On this website the advanced and the exchange seem to have a bad habit of turning into a win for black. I find this strange though since the exchange seems to be a good opening for white according to my opening book. Since it seems the Paulsen is more likely to win a vote than the Tarrasch if its not too late I'd like to change my vote to the Paulsen. 3.Nc3 |
