Chessmaster
Just thought I would let it be known that I just found chessmaster grandmasters edition (which I can't imagine trying to learn to play chess without) Accompanying Art of Learning book by josh waitzken and the searching for bobby fisher movie on dvd. For 35 bucks on Amazon.

I apologize for the advertisement aspect of this.

It has bugs in it...
That edition of Chessmaster has bugs in it.

I used to have it and while using it my computer would freeze up then shut down.

Also there is a problem with the graphics in it...I can't remember what since it has been almost a year now...maybe more since I used it.

So far for the Chessmaster programs, Chessmaster 10 is the best.

If you google "Chessmaster Grandmaster edition" you will see many complaints from people.

Just my 2 cents...to each his own.

Chessmaster Grandmaster Edition
This edition of the Chessmaster software may contain bugs, but I have used it and I like it. I also recommend Chessmaster 9000 (though outdated) for XP users and those whose graphics adapter is not compatible with the Grandmaster edition.

Chessmaster
I have all three versions. The only problem I can recall with grandmaster is that the drills don't seem to work properly. Chessmaster is a good program for beginners to learn the game. I also like the variety of opponents it offers. I use fritz for analysing my finished games though.

I disagree
Combinations I have never had any problems with my grandmasters edition, not once and have been using if for 6 months. Maybee your computer is missing some of the requirments.

New computer
I have gotten a new computer since I threw out my copy of Chessmaster GM edition.

But I'm not going to buy it again.
Not when CM10 is 9 bucks at Staples...and just as good as the GM edition.

I have always been a Chessmaster fan...just not the GM edition. They had the chance to improve on CM10 but all they did was give it a new name and re-sell it.

Hmm
Combinations you may well become my nemesis

Does CM10 have all of the instructional josh waitzkin material as well?

I must say 10 bucks is pretty good

It is the same...
CM10 is the same as CM Grandmaster edition.
That was one of the biggest complaints when it came out.

And yes it has all those training features...I dislike waitzkin but his material is in CM10 as well.

Fritz and ChessBase software
If people are looking for chess-playing and training software, I would highly recommend ChessBase, and its accompanying program Fritz. Fritz can play chess at any level you choose, up to grandmaster, and incorporates tactical, opening and endgame training. ChessBase also holds a database of past grandmaster games. This English Chess Federation-sponsored program holds no bugs.
