Unknown vs Knights of Honor Chess Club - Consultation game
Hi everybody, This is a new consultation game. This time you don't know who is your opponent. His or her identity will be revealed by the end of the game. fatcat2 and me will do the moves to analyze the board (thank U, fatcat2), I do not participate, because I know his or her identity and how he or she plays. This means of course that you guys and gals don't know the strength of him or her, so he or she could be a high or low rated player..... Good luck, to you guys and to "Unknown"!!

Move 1.
I vote for d5 In this situation taking the centre with the pawn is best. We could also reply with Nf6. :)

The most common line
Is 1. Nf3 d5 2. d4 Nf6 3. c4 c6, so I likewise vote d5.
My vote: 1...d5
Hi all. For the same reasons as those detailed above, I would play 1...d5, to place a pawn in the centre. I would also like to take this opportunity to say that, although I have volunteered to carry part of the unrated analysis game, I am not the unknown player, and I have no idea who this player is. But, good luck to him/her!
So:
3 votes for d5, I will post it.

Hmmmm
I would say this is a two part challenge. Win the game being the obvious challenge, determing the unknown player the second and more difficult challenge. Lets see what move 2 tells us about our unknown.

King's Indian Attack
The main line is: Reti (A07), King's Indian attack, Yugoslav variation 1. Nf3 d5 2. g3 Nf6 3. Bg2 c6 4. O-O Bg4 5. d3 Nbd7 6. Nbd2 e5 With good chances for black, So I still vote 2. ... Nf6.
Move 2. Nf6
I'm in unfamiliar territory here. However, I will trust the judgment of Eddie by voting 2. Nf6 as well. I am anxious to see how this plays out.

Who is Eddie?
2...c5
I prefer 2...c5, aiming into a sort of reversed-KID position. However, I also think that 2...Nf6 is much more flexible.
So:
2... Nf6 is posted.

Move 3
I vote for c6. :)

Same same, c6.
Why not e6? It would free our f bishop and let us rook faster.
Move 3. Nc6
I'm confused. The d pawn is protected by both a knight and our queen. Why not go for Nc6 followed by e5?
Whites light square bishop
c6 protects the d5 pawn without getting in the way of our bishops unlike 3...e6. Nc6 develops another piece but doesn't oppose the bishops control of the h1 - a8 diagonal. That's just my view on the move c6 it may not be correct. :)
3...c6
I prefer 3...c6 as it helps blunt the line of White's powerful fianchettoed g2-bishop.
Well
I count enough votes for 3... c6, I will post it to unknown.

I vote Bg4
1. Nf3 d5 2. g3 Nf6 3. Bg2 c6 4. d3 Bg4 5. O-O Nbd7 6. Nbd2 e5
Move 4. Bg4
4. d3 Bg4 5. 0-0 e5 6. ? e4 (in the interest of capturing "Unknown's" fianchettoed bishop).

I vote Nbd7
Its the main line, with 41 out of 46 games following that line in the database, and it gives black a good chance of winning. 1. Nf3 d5 2. g3 Nf6 3. Bg2 c6 4. d3 Bg4 5. Nbd2 Chess opening: Reti (A07), King's Indian attack, Yugoslav variation
Move 5.
I vote for Nbd7
