New Alternative to Coaching Program for Mid to High Rated Members
At the advice of some of the club's moderators, I have decided to offer an alternative to the coaching program for our mid to high rated members desiring a coach. There are simple not enough highly rated coaches to train these members. Under this new program, I am asking the club's highly rated members to consider playing one or more unrated games with one or more of the following membership pool: (1) sblack (1700+) (2) raisonab (1700+) (3) hazelwood (1800+) (4) Zendara (1700+) (5) ph014 (1700+) (6) nacholibre (1700+) (7) crckinguraces (1700+) (8) schurl (2000+) (9) ariaraman (1700+) Please let me know when these members are challenged to an unrated game so I can remove them from the list. Thank you, Jim

Mistake in above list
I made a mistake with ariaraman. I will include him in the list of members to be trained via a coach.

You can take me off the list. My rating is now a little over 1700. This is "nacholibre." I recently changed my username. When I first joined the club, I still had a provisional rating of 1200. Thank you.

What exactly are we suppose to be doing in these games? Are we just playing against them or are we suppose to coaching them on each move?

My thought
Was to play unrated games against them, and either during the game, or at the end, offer some advice, either tactical or strategic. I just thought that the 1200-1500 player would get more out of playing games against higher rated club members than one on one with a coach, expecially since we have a shortage of coaches.

So as they play we offer better or at least different alternatives to the moves they make and the reasoning behind it. That is similar to what I have been doing in a few games, but I am not sure how much it really helps. It would be interesting to play a game while doing this and get feedback as to how much it helps if at all. Because it may help if they arrive in certain similar positions, but it may not help them improve overall. Also, have the people listed agreed to this? I don't want to send the challenge if they haven't.

Good point, antagonistknight
I will send each of them a private message explaining this new approach to coaching.

what i will do is as we play if they make a move thats not so good i will tell them what i think they should have done and why. I will also hint at what type of move they need to make now. It may lead to a draw this way but they will learn how to balance a position. I will not tell them the move to make but will clarify the needs of the position for them. I will recomend certain solid openings for them to study. I will have them bookmark certain opening sites on line so they can refere to them for assistence....janet

I have done both, suggesting alternates as the game went on, and I have also gone back after the game and made annotations for the other player. Both seemed to work well, for coach and student alike seemingly. If it doesn't prove valuable or worth the time, no big deal. It seemed to me to be a more efficient way of getting some coaching tips, techniques, tactics, and strategies out to the greatest number of club members. I am not sure how much time it would take for each of you higher ranked coaches, but if each you could challenge one or two to an unrated game, I think they would all be covered and could learn from your skills. This is how I have been coached in the past, and I found it to be very insightful. My coach would sometimes pause to point out things such as the little Greek gift or other tactical considerations, but usually we just played the game through, and then he would go back to the move where it fell apart and offer alternatives and thoughts. Great Success of This Initiative
Due to the overwhelming response of highly rated members willing to extend their services in the endeavor, all the present mid to high rated members desiring training have been involved in unrated games. Other members who desire training of this fashion are encouraged to post here. Best, Jim

Ok, I will send games to sblack and zendara since I have done games like this before and they do not take nearly as much time as pure coaching. I may try to take on schurl once I gain the minimum 2150+ rating, only 47 points away currently.
