going by average rating instead of top 90 days
a player on my team complained he was getting axed because his top rating in 90 days didnt reflect on where he was at today. Whats your thoughts on this? bob

I suppose
that he timed out? If so, when it happens in my team, I don't give team games for a period of time, depending on how many games he or she timed out. All members know that from the very beginning when they join the team. I explain that a player whose current rating is in great difference with the top rating past 90 days are very difficult to match. So, they first need to restore their rating by playing other games than team games. If someone doesn't agree, I can always say that these are the rules and of course, they have to take it. Although I never had a member who became axed.... mostly they apologize for timing out.

Interesting one
It can be challenging with rating differences sometimes, it can be time consuming to check averages on every match, if there seems to be a large difference between rating and top rating I try to. But I have also found that creating open challenges with these players and adding a note that their top rating is quite higher then their current rating allows other captains to match accordingly. But in your case Bob, the player is saying that due to life circumstance they don't have the time to put as much consideration into moves, therefore their top rating does not reflect their current ability? That is a toughie, I guess he could be matched with a player that had a similar discrepancy between current and top rating? Each team seems to have a few players that have rating differences like that. But I think doji may be right in saying having the player complete some challenge games or tournaments will help in restoring a true rating. The other issue I have found is inner team tournaments, quite often players can be up against a number of opponents with significantly higher ratings, normally one or two matches like this doesn't hurt to much, but a few in a row can. We have changed our innerteam tournies to be seperated into ratings brackets, this has seemed to help a bit with that. It means that team members occasionaly need to set the tournies up if captains are not in the relevant rating bracket. The bonus is that tournie points can be awarded.
