Team Name Exclusivity
As everyone here knows ( or should know) my team The Pawn Stars has been lurking around these here parts for over six years. You could say that we are one of the original teams and, in all that time, no one has dared to even think of naming their team Pawn Stars ( or similar) It is a known fact that there can be only One and that One is controlled by Xena. Imagine my surprise, shock, horror, chagrin, etc, when on a casual troll through the team list thingie, do I find an imposter Pawn Star team named PawnStars ( running it all into one word is no excuse) I, as I am inclined to do, sent the offending captain a friendly message and strongly hinted that a name change might be in order. I propose that Gameknot should not allow duplicate ( or almost duplicate) team names. I ascertain that Pawn Stars is my intellectual property, whilst on Gameknot. McDonalds wouldn't stand for it and neither will we. By the way the team captain in question has not replied to my message ( reproduced below) From xena Dear Jeremy (AKA skip_bail) After consulting my team lawyers, I am bound to point out that your team PawnStars ( created this year) is not entirely unlike the title of my team, the original trademarked 'The Pawn Stars' ® which was created in March 2004. As I do not wish to engage in a lengthy and costly court battle over copyright matters, I am therefore willing to settle out of court for a moderate sum ( our bank details will be forwarded to you in due course) and on the proviso that you amend your team name. Some suggested selections are: ' PawnStars -The Tribute Team' 'McPawnStars' ( I, of course, will retain ownership of the franchise) Or you may wish to simply go with 'The Copycats'. The choice is entirely yours. Hoping to hear from you, at your earliest convenience, in regard to the swift resolution of this matter. Yours, In Litigation Xena, Team Captain of 'The Pawn Stars' ® and

I suppose it's unfortunate, but they really haven't done anything wrong. They probably didn't even know of you guys when they started their team. As for GK banning "similar" team names, I'd guess that exact duplicates cannot be created, but other than that it would be difficult to measure the similarity of two team names. Regards, MaCa.

Common sense
Well, you'd think common sense would apply: when creating a team, check the team list to make sure the name you choose could not easily be mistaken for the name of a current team. Then again, you don't see much common sense these days.

2 cents
That would be frustrating - but I'm wondering if they knew of your team prior. I tend to think so as I would do research myself if I was starting a team - however it's always beneficial to give the benefit of the doubt. It will be interesting the response back. In addition to the topic.. I think it's a bit overkill that teams are changing their names so frequently... It should only be allowed once. I understand change is needed at times... but if it's to frequent - it should show up on the team page somewhere (aka...) Along the lines of duplicate sign ins on profiles.. Hope it works out for you Pawn Stars. Laurie Capt of Pawns and Stars... (jk

Where do you draw the line?
I am doji, captain of "Che(ck)(ss)mate(s)". There are other teams with the word checkmate in it. I didn't see any harm in choosing our name (the other teams are older). My point is: exact the same name, I don't think GK allows it. Using the words lawyer, court in your message, I don't call this very nice, sorry Xena. And, most of all, this site is to have fun, it is not big business we are running here!! Jo

Speak for yourself Jo
It may not be big business to you Jo, but you should see my weekly wage bill, not to mention the transfer deals! If it wasn't for the contributions from a dodgy pair of brothers from an unpronounceable place in the former Soviet Union, a number of stuffed brown envelops from various residents of the Palace of Westminster, and of course all the exclusive TV rights and sponsorship deals, I'm sure my team would go under.

I appreciate your comments dogi but it WAS a tongue -in- cheek message, not designed to offend. I'm sure the recipient picked up on that. As it happens, the Other Captain has decided to totally ignore me. Just like in real litigation Xena, Captain of The Checkmated Pawn Stars

xena and charleshiggie
xena, that explains something and yes, it is not very nice either that he just ignores you.... charlehiggie, you seem to be upset by my statement, and I am afraid I don't understand some parts of the post (must be a language problem). Are you saying there is much money involved in your team? Or do I understand this wrong?
Hi Jo
Hi Jo, sorry my friend, I was just trying to be amusing, and, for just for a few moments consider what it would be like if the England Internet Chess Team had the same money as the England football team. Please forgive my silly sense of humour. Charles
No, I am sorry
Very stupid of me, in fact it is my kind of humor, but like it was written it seemed you were upset and didn't understand all of it, as I said. You got me here! Must be amusing too!!!! - lol
And...
anyone can read it, aaaargh, there goes my reputation on GK;......

Well I got charleshiggie's post first time...and I laughed. A lot. Humour, especially when written, doesn't always translate that well across different cultures. I find this with some of my team messages which are always tongue-in-cheek and designed to be funny. Some people just don't get it, through no fault of their own. But that's another story. Anyway back to my original gripe. Okay I have to admit my team is sort of mediocre chesswise and, therefore, there are only two reasons I get membership applications. 1. They fall madly in love with me due to my stunning good looks and vibrant personality or ( and more usually) 2. They join because of the team name. Yes, all my team are guys and they want to be able to say they are Pawn Stars. Admittedly a team with this name run by a British chap called Jeremy is probably not going to fire their imagination in quite the same way.. but there ya go. I still think it is a concern and, if my membership drops, I shall place the blame squarely on Jeremy's skinny shoulders.

Why players join teams
Well there you go, I thought you recruited players in true Xena "Warrior Princess" style by hunting them down, disarming them in armed combat and throwing them over your shoulder and carrying them off home....... In a similar way to you, I think loads join my team, in order to say to friends and family "I play Internet chess for England"!
No
charleshiggie, I think they fall madly in love with you....
Well I still drag them home on occasion but it gets quite tiring. I think the ones that come to me freely tend to be the most loyal. Not that I encourage team defectors but if they want to go, I bid them farewell with a tear in my eye and hope they will return to me someday. If you love something set it free If it comes back to you, it's yours If it doesn't, hunt it down and kill it Sad isn't it?

Xena, you're a trip! (Most certainly meant as a compliment.)
Well xena, my old sparring partner, I tend to agree with you, I'm sad to say. It shows a complete lack of imagination on their behalf. I'm sure that when setting up the team they would have known that there was another Pawn Stars, they probably had a space initially, like your team name, but GK wouldn't allow it, so they made it one word. Or maybe I'm just a cynical old so and so.

I see the PawnStars v2.0 are still in existence better get your legal team of Steele & Jeremy over to sort them out

I don't think it's an issue any more => gameknot.com
