starcheckSubject: Take charge of your personal settings You have a lot of control over your account by changing your personal settings. I suggest you print this message out so that you can read the instructions while making the changes. Everyone should correct their personal settings because by default they are incorrect for most people. Q: I didn't receive a warning message that I was about to lose a game on time. How do I correct this? A: To fix your settings print this email out and next time you log in follow these directions: * click on SETTINGS * Under <E-mail notifications> you need to check the first 4 boxes. By default you will have at least two boxes that are not checked. * then scroll down and click on <Update Settings>. That will allow G/K to send you a warning message when your game time is less than 24 hours. It will also notify you when it's your move and let you know when you have a message! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- And there's a whole lot more! Do you like bright sunny days or are you a creature of the night and bright doesn't appeal to you? When you do the above (reason I wanted you to print this out) Let's get into some more advanced stuff. We'll move on with how your screen looks: Right below your email setting is your screen setting. See the "Website style/layout:" Yours may be set to "GameKnot default". Click the arrow and scroll to "Ocean Breeze". Now click on the Update box and wait a few seconds. Then exit and see how your screen and menu arrangement has changed. I like this one much better, but some people like the dark, gloomy menus. If you really want dark and gloomy go back to your settings and select "Midnight Sun". ---------------------------------------------------- Next: Click on SETTINGS again. To the right of the screen settings you'll see these two very important listings: » Automatic challenge decline rules » Other preferences I'll cover them one at a time: Click on » Automatic challenge decline rules The first setting is the days per move. I recommend 3 days for min and 5 days for max. Don't make the mistake of entering anything other than a 3 or 5 for the first box! If you enter a 1 or 2 for the minimum and a 5 for the maximum you will not be able to play in ANY 3 day team matches! That's because if the match is for a 3 day event the computer expects to see a 3 in your settings! It doesn't know that a 1 or 2 is less than a 3 because it's not programmed to calculate that. Below those settings it shows Private games. If you want for anybody to challenge you to a game then keep the default setting which is 'Allow'. I had to set mine to 'Decline' and I suspect you will too. If you allow anyone to challenge you you'll be overloaded in private games and not have time for more important games like tournaments, league and team games. My other settings here are: Opponent's rating must be within: 50 points below mine and 200 points above mine Min completed games for opponent: 700 My current number of active games is less than: 25 Only the last setting is important if you have "Decline" checked above. If, for example, you had "12" in this setting and were playing 11 games, your green dot would go off because you would not be eligible to play in a team match. A team match is 2 games and that would put you over the limit based on your settings. Make sure you click on SAVE and then go to the Main Menu and click on SETTINGS again. DO NOT hit your back arrow key to get back to where we want to go! This time in your setting menu we'll cover » Other preferences so click on it. » Other preferences What's important in this menu are the numbers you have for: Max league games: and Max team games If you want to play in league games then you want to give this a high number (maybe 6 or 10) If you want to play in team games then I suggest setting this number at 12 or higher. Keep in mind that 12 team games is 6 team matches and most team games take 3-6 months to complete. If you only want to play 4 team games then you have to put the number 4 in and that will allow you to play in 2 team matches. Whatever numbers you use make sure you click on Update to save the settings. I want everyone to understand how important these settings are and how much time and effort it helps Bill (our co-captain) and I work out team matches. The worse thing somebody can do to either of us is say something like, "I'm going to be busy for awhile so hold off on my team matches until I'm not as busy." It's not up to us to remember what 35 different people say! All a person has to do is go into their personal settings and change them! They can change the number of team games to "0" and that will not allow the captain or co-captain to accidentally put them in a match, but if they don't change their settings then the other team captains can see then as available and send a challenge over with their name on it. Then your captain and co-captain are seen as the bad guys if we forgot 'that person didn't want any more matches for awhile'. Also, if your game load is getting too heavy go to: » Automatic challenge decline rules "My current number of active games is less than:" and enter a number 6 games less than what you have. After you have finished 8 games you will automatically be available to play team games again (remember a team match requires 2 open slots). I hope this helps a lot of you - I know it sure helped the work load on bluenoser and myself. Don (from the DUNE team) |
