Green dots? When I first started looking for team matches the field was wide open, most teams had available players and there was no problem finding matches, some times for all of my available players at once. Now, I'm down to just finding matches for 2 players and having a difficult time. I came across one team with over 30 members and the only member available to play was the captain; with many of his/her team mates playing 0 games. I understand player burn out but I am concerned about having this many. Is any one else concerned? |

out as many games as my players have in "max team games". I just reported the problem to Site Support and included your text in the hopes that it will encourage them to act on a suggestion I've made to them 3 times now. Perhaps if more captains who like the suggestion could express that to Site Support, maybe they'll act on it. I have no clue as to how they make their decisions though. Here's what I sent. Ray Hi Support, I submitted a suggestion at two different times as to how GK can make pairing more efficient for team captains. The idea which I'll reiterate below does not appear to me to be a large programming effort. It would really help as pairing is becoming more difficult with fewer players available for team games. Here's what a captain just posted on the club captain forum: "Is it just me or have you noticed: there are fewer and fewer green dots available for play? When I first started looking for team matches the field was wide open, most teams had available players and there was no problem finding matches, some times for all of my available players at once. Now, I'm down to just finding matches for 2 players and having a difficult time. I came across one team with over 30 members and the only member available to play was the captain; with many of his/her team mates playing 0 games. I understand player burn out but I am concerned about having this many. Is any one else concerned?" The idea I expressed was to use the advanced player search. If there is a value in the "team rating", then, on the search results screen, show the team name and a colored dot (or some other indication) if the player has not reached the maximum team games. If this were available, a captain could then open two windows, perform a search in each one, and compare the search results to find a match on team and availability. The current time- consuming alternative is to go through the team table looking for available players with matching ratings. Thank you. Ray |

If anything, the change I've observed is more with the challenge culture of the Team Captains. Nowadays, getting challenges, particularly multi-player ones has gotten tedious because Captains are becoming increasingly strict with their conditions for fair matches. I find myself spending more time and more looking for challenge opportunities that I believe both I and the opposing Captain would find acceptable. Regards, MaCa. |

macaI disagree with the implication that 'less green dots means it's better." I just had a discussion with sydneyapplebaum (who is one many captains I admire at this site) about this same subject and I told him, "You can tell a healthy team from an unhealthy one just by looking at how many players on a team are willing to take on new games." (how many dots are shown on the screen). When you have only one or two players willing to take on a new game then you are pushing your players too hard. I've watched this exact theme evolve over a period of years at both RHP and G/K and it's my opinion that the players who don't want to take on new games are losing interest. (See my previous post about 'Chess Burnout and how to avoid it.'). Even the Roman army would give their fighters a break and reward them after a victory before rushing them into yet another conquest. Cheers, Don |

Response from GameKnotnames (or team number) to the advanced player search results. Then I realized that I don't know anything about the programming or data involved. Maybe the data is not available and would need to be extracted or maybe some limit is reached or there's some performance consideration, etc. And then I got the message below from GK support. It's not what I hoped for but at least it better explains what goes on and its not the usual canned response: "Thank you for your suggestion, it will be passed on to our development team for further consideration." Hello, sydneyapplebaum, There is a number of considerations that go into deciding what feature is implemented next, and unfortunately it is not always as simple as it might seem due to various inter-dependencies or other more pressing issues (for example, when we perform internal optimization of the entire code base, absolutely all features are put on hold, no matter how simple, because it is not possible to implement any new features until after the optimization is completed). It is part of the reason why we are unable to comment on if, or when, a particular feature might be implemented. We do have a very long to-do list, and we are working on it as fast as we can. Thank you for choosing GameKnot as your premier chess battlefield! Best regards, GameKnot.com |
