Too Much Too Soon
I'm REALLY keen for each individual captain's feedback on the following scenario:

A new player joins. They have a little green asterisk next to their name. Do you.....

A: Give them one team match and see how they fare.
B: Pass wind in their general direction.
C: Load em up with team matches until the green asterisk goes away, that'll learn 'em.
D: Actually ask how many matches they'd like to play.
E: Other (please elucidate).

I joined a team thinking it was all good in the hood. Two days later I log in and discover I've been assigned ten team games. In the middle of teaching practicum, where I barely have the time for beer, let alone skittles. Awesome.

I personally like to have 6 GK games on the go, no more, no less. Suddenly ten was dumped on top of my individual games and my tournament games. Hip, hip, hooray!

That's part of why I've struck out to set up a team where it is written into team description that each shall play only max of 4 team games at any one time. Forrest Gump be damned, everyone knows what they're going to get!

Now, to bring this on home. Team Capts and Co-Capts can hardly complain about time outs if they are not following D and actually asking team members how many matches they'd like. At least that's my humble opinion. Of course as has been previously published, I don't really think time outs are worthy of complaint anyway, but for those who disagree (the majority it seems), ask yourself one question: Are you feeling lucky, punk?

Also, "Have I actually asked this player how many games they'd like to play?"

Well, that's my two cents for today, I'm eager to gather everyone else's and thus end up the richer.

in reply to your first entry, i make certain that new team members understand and have set "max team games"
and have told me their time control preferences before loading them with games. i remind them that team policy
is to have no more than 2 unexplained timeouts. has worked pretty well so far. ray "veggie chess"

New team players
I discuss with new players how many team games they want and help them to set up their
preferences. I don't like to give more than ten team games in most instances. I do have a few
rather prolific players that go well beyond the ten, but; they are established payers and have
proven they can handle them. For others who want more, I direct them to the tournament and
league sections of the sight.

So it's not just A08, we do have team capts that work with new players to ensure their max games setting is correct. Maybe I just got unlucky. In the end I had to resign my extra matches, with a note of apology to each opponent explaining that I was simply overburdened. Interestingly enough, some of those players msg back pointing out similar experiences had happened to them when joining new teams.

Perhaps we can start an asterisk awareness campaign, though A08 has pretty much done that. Probably the type of captains that go dumping games on new members (including free members which belies belief) without first checking their preferences are set up are not members of this club anyway.

Well my curiosity is sated, thanks for your replies.

Deleted Posts?
Those deleted posts just distract from main question asked in this thread. Main thing in the deleted posts was me acknowledging A08 had already covered the idea of not dumping games on players just because their asterisk is green in a different thread.

For what it's worth
I check the new team member's history and if they are a premium member, I give them all the games they want to carry as long as there are no timeouts. On new players to gameknot, they are put on a probation with no more than 4 team games until I determine if they are going to be in good standing. We usually don't accept a new team member until they have completed 25 games on gameknot.

I advise new team members how to access settings to limit their number of team games and
never allocate too many at once. I cap the games to a max of ten for the first six months or so
less if I think their game load is high.

unless a team application is from a friend or family member of a current team mate I do not admit
brand new gk members to my team, as we all know many join gk but not all hang around once
the newness wears off. I am also wary of admitting new team members with a history of
timeouts.

this one time, on gameknot, I did admit a player with an extensive timeout history to the team,
he swore he wouldn't timeout, he did. I guess behaviours don't change afterall.

I'll give you a bit more then...

I have saved a 'welcome message' in the notes section of my own profile that I can paste into
the message field for new members! that way I get everything in and miss nothing out. it works
for me.

Hot Tip from Chillliman
That's gold! My welcome msg is just, "Welcome aboard, mate" but it would be good not to have to type that every time a new member joins! Plus it's advice that all captains can use methinks.

The first things I do with a new member is that I tell them to set their # of team games properly. The matter is mentioned in the very "welcome" message I sent. Then, I wait for a couple of days before I assign them with team matches. Gotta love that GK has that setting at least, there's no way I could keep track of my players' capabilities without it.

Thoughts on new members, timeouts, and such-like....
If anyone can glean some ideas or benefit from it, this is how I approach applications for membership of the team........

On receiving an application for team membership ...
I check their timeout record, and also check their completed games record for recent timeouts.
If there are any recent timeouts (last 6 months or so) or if they have timed out more than 3% or 4% of their games I ask for an explanation, at the same time explaining we have a strict team-agreed policy on timed-out games.

I ask them for an undertaking not to time out games if we accept them into the team, referring them to the team’s home page which spells out our expectations.

If their explanation is reasonable and an undertaking is received, I accept them into the team sending them our normal welcome letter. They very rarely let us down, but if they do, they are out!

This has worked well and timeouts are unusual. We have had only one time-out since the beginning of April (not bad for a team of ninety members), and that was by a member who is having the distraction of moving his family to another town, having to find a home to live in, whilst having the problems of settling into a new responsible job. Timing out one game is certainly forgiveable in such circumstances.

As for the number of games .... we ask everyone to set their maximum team preference (not all do) .... and if a new member wants plenty of games, they get them! I think it is worth the risk to demonstrate our confidence in them.

...hope this helps..
