TIPS FOR NEW (and not so new) CAPTAINS ON GAMEKNOT
After you have been a captain for a while there are certain things you would have liked to have known, well let's help spread the word. Give your tips. And ask the questions here. For instance, I hear all the time grumblings about captains who just challenge a team without looking at ratings and availability first. You get a challenge from a team offering up a 900 player and your lowest rated player is 1200. Happens a lot! So instead of complaining, and ignoring the challenge, lets spread the word on setting up challenges, recruiting team members, dealing with team in fighting, keeping up moral, developing talent, etc. I bet we all learn something!

i usually accept all the challenges that other teams send.
Same here. I usually accept all challenges from any team. I just not try to over load any of my players even when the green dot is highlighted next to there name.

Send message to team members
Has this feature been removed or am I looking past it?
Send message to team members
It's back up! Fourth item in the left hand column.
send message to team members
but now messages sent to team members go on the team forum!!!
I guess GameKnot considers it an improvement.
I don't like this improvement.I sent my message to Gameknot.I hope many captains will do the same.
With all my emails to team members, I put a note at the bottom to watch the forum for announcements, that's not even helping... *curses*
I noticed cat mentioned emails, are those private message through GK? I would like to know if other teams are considering using email outside of GK, as a possible solution?
I dont think the whole team would give out their private emails. maybe some, but not all.
i noticed cat talking about emails, she should no.

Cat this might be a great time to say...
I checked your profile page a while ago and was pleasantly surprised when I saw the link that took me to your recently published book, Congratulations on that, but I just looked again and the link was gone, can you send me that link, all of your other information was gone also, were you required by GK to take the link down? After seeing the above posts, it reminded me of old times, and it also reminded me about your book. I was going there to place an order. I had been on the link before and had looked at you book, and your introductions, made me want to buy it, I guess I waited to long,(due to pride mostly) I was hoping to ask if I could get an autograph copy of your book, (but again mostly due to pride), I may have missed my opportunity. I signed copy with a personal inscription would be even better, I know just the person to send it to.
I would be interested in that information as well! I love books.
truth be told
I try to always give a fair match up . since being a co captain of a few teams and now captain of my own team .. however .. i think if were being honest with ourselves i dont think theres a single team captain around that doesnt try to sneak in a winning scenario once in a while

New members
Hi Captains, How does a prospective new member send a request to join? I can't find a link anywhere (probably because I'm already on a team). Thanks Gdhamil
They go to the team home page and beneath the team's list of players it says "Join Team." You click that and you're either automatically on the team, or the captain gets a message to approve you.
Also, the "Join Team" link is visible only to players who are not on a team, since they must first leave their current to join another team.

Overloading the Players despite the green light
It should be the players responsibility to set his number of maximum team games. It is too much trouble (particularly for a large team) for the captains to keep up with how many games they need to be playing. I think that setting you "Max team games" is part of participating in the team.
@ id=herbb52
I agree, but there is no way of knowing (except after the fact) that players are not setting a manageable max of team games. I agree with giving the players' responsibility to manage themselves. That is the best way to run a team: like Napoleon's army where each soldier carried a Field Marshall's baton in his rucksack.
Don't ask the other team captain to manage your team
Captains that have players that are unavailable should ask their players to set their "Max Team Games" to zero so that they do not have the green light saying they are available. If I allow a unavailable player to continue to appear as available I am asking the opposing team captian to manage and keep up with MY players.
@herbb52
There is a bit of a glitch in the green light system. If a player's max team game limit is set to, say, 8 games and she is currently playing 7, the green light is on. Surely you are not suggesting that players should set their team game limit to zero after having completed the 1st game (assuming they were playing 8) and before finishing the 2nd game? And moreover, that as team captain, I should oversee this?
Unavailable
I am suggesting that players that are "unavailable for games (any games at all) should set their games to zero so that they don't appear as available. A player that is playing 7 games is NOT unavailable. If he cannot play because he has too many games the system itself will say so. If he is not playing games by his own choice or because the captain is penalizing him for timeouts the opposing team should not have to keep up with that.
What do you do when ...
You have a player with 8 "Max Team Games", but is currently playing 7. Do you add him to the "Message to team captains" as unavailable, the take him out of that list when he completes a game. I think not. The only reason (I can think of) as to why a person would be listed in the messages to team captains as unavailable would be because he is currently taking no more team games, but there is no reason to list them as unavailable if they set their "Max Team Games" to zero or to what ever level they are willing to take new games at.
OK. I understand. The players I have listed are on the verge of being removed from the team. They are likely already unavailable since they have not logged lately and have timed out because of it. I list them as unavailable usually as an interim measure to deciding whether to remove them from the team or not. I think there is a lot of merit to just simply removing them, but then again, there have been cases of extenuating circumstances and I am glad I was slow to react. Sorry if this is a bother for captains. I always request they put their team game setting to zero, but players who time out, are not always the most compliant or the quickest at complying and this is not necessarily due to irresponsibility or insubordination. Eventually (I think) these players and situations are sorted out. But now that you have raised it, I am going to see what I have on my team page for UNAVAILABLE.

Removing Player from Team
In my opinion one of the best ways to deal with players that are not communicating or are timing out is to remove them from the team. If you remove a player from the team it does NOT cancel their team games. If they are timing out it won't make a difference whether they are a team member or not if they are not making moves. The team will still continue to lose matches. If they contact you with a good reason for their problem they can always be added back to the team, and just pickup where they left off. If they are spiteful and resign from team games, or refuse to communicate you may not want them on the team anyway. It is tough enough to make good matches for team members without having to worry about whether the person is going to timeout or not. A person that is timing out or not communicating is to much of a "team" player. That is not to mention how rude it is for a player who is not making moves in a game to continue to show up as available.
I have the same problem. Some players are unavailable for timeouts, other don't set their max team games, other have connection problem,I cannot ever send them message to remember to set it.Anyway I think it's no too difficult to other captains read my message to captains before send a challenge,as I do.
