Team Tournament Concept
In regards to the Team Tournament idea, and there has been some interest among captains and moderators here (see here: gameknot.com and here: gameknot.com), I have been recently thinking of a scenario that could possibly work. It doesn't involve using a mini tournament format, but a single elimination format using brackets which could be kept here in the Club Captain forum. This allows MUCH more freedom to the participating teams and Captains. Let's work together to see if we can polish this into a feasible construct...

The setup:
1. A thread would be started for Captains and Co-Captains to enroll their teams.

2. A deadline would be set for Captains to join the tournament, this would allow a tournament with as few as 2 teams, up to a set number or even unlimited.

3. A date would be set and the tournament would begin when teams were seeded, possibly by their position on the ladder at the closing of a specific date.

The Rules:
1. The higher seeded team challenges the lower seeded team to a 2 vs. 2 team match. Both captains MUST agree to the match, like any other match and the fairness of the match will be decided between the captains of the two participating teams.

2. There is a link posted to the specific team match immediately. The winning team advances, the losing team is eliminated, a draw and both teams advance. The link must be posted immediately in-case the two teams have other matches against each other happening simultaneously.

3. The challenging team can use 2 players of ANY rating, as long as the opposing team has a possible match. This means if a team sends a 2400 player in their challenge, the responding team must have an adequate match and the challenging team can not expect the responding team to send their highest rated available player (a 1700 for instance) as a response just because they're the lower seeded team.

4. Advancing teams do not need to use the same players in future rounds, like a baseball team, they can use a rotation of any player on their roster.

5. Original seeds will hold true and will not be adjusted at the beginning of each subsequent round. If there are 16 teams and one of the teams is first on the ladder, they will be seeded 1 and will play 16 (which might be 181st on the ladder). If 1 beats 16 and 15 beats 2, then 1 will play 15 in round 2.

6. Teams who do not have an opponent for a round will have an opponent in the next round and no team can advance more than 1 round without an opponent unless all remaining teams have also advanced through a round without an opponent. Designated byes will be given beginning with higher-seeded teams and moving down through the seeds.

7. Teams that advance by draws will not face each other in the next round unless there is no suitable opponent remaining for either team, this is the only way the seeds will be manipulated. In this case they will not change, if 1 and 16 draw and 15 beats 2, then 1 will play 15 and 16 will play the highest remaining seed. This is to avoid 'friendly' teams drawing straight through, by manipulation to a favorable 3 team finale. In this case, 1 can not play 16 again until 16 is the only possible opponent remaining, or unless the other possible opponent is entitled to a bye-round.

8. The match will be held with the same rules as a regular team match, this means that if one of your players loses by time-out, your team is just as eliminated as it would be if your player played a complete match and lost.

9. Responding teams have the right to decline matches they deem unsuitable, disputes will be settled by a panel of judges who do not have teams within the tournament. These disputes SHOULD NOT be aired publicly, but should be settled privately through messages with the panel of judges. Public attacks can cause expulsion from the tournament.

10. All matches must have a time control set to 3 days per move to keep the tournament moving.

11. If, for some reason, two teams can not settle on a match, both teams may advance as though their match were a draw. If the final round teams can not settle on a match, or draw 3 consecutive times, the result can be a tie. (Personally, I hate this idea and would love to find a better alternative, even a one player, one game sudden death match.)

As you can probably tell, I've put a lot of thought into this and this is the most flexible idea for all teams that I have been able to find. Please, look for pitfalls and if there are any suggestions, suggest them! Before anything can be started, these rules must be solid and agreeable for everyone participating.

I'm surprised that no one has replied to this thread. JJ, you certainly have put some time, effort and thought
into this. BTW, love your profile picture - GO BUCKS!

I will volunteer to sit on the panel of judges unless our team shows interest in such a format. I have not yet
posted anything on our team forum about this idea but will tonight.

I'm willing to help manage it if there are captains interested in entering their teams. If this is popular enough, it may be something GK picks up and actually sanctions, like the regular monthly tournaments.

I may also manage it through private messages if Club Captain wouldn't mind hosting the tournament thread, and it could bump up membership within the club as well.

A sudden death format really needs to be ironed out though, the more I think about it the more I dislike the idea of a tie...
