Introduce yourself and your team
I am captain of the team Guardians of the Fortress since April 2008. I took over when the captain no longer had the time. But we lost a great many members in the meantime. Guardians of the Fortress started in Sept. 2005. Many of its members are those from another team that folded.

hi, I'm co-captain of team ChessDudes, a team I created in Feb 2005 but unfortunately due to work and personal commitments I could no longer operate by myself. about 12mths ago, prior to co-captains existing, I was at the stage where I had to either close the team or find a substitute captain, thankfully superhenko stepped into the breach and has been a fine leader of ChessDudes. so far we've managed to complete over 5500 games and have several foundation members still in the team.

I hope that this club will give us all a sounding board and a safe haven in which to exchange ideas. that's enough from me for now, I look forward to some lively exchanges in these forums.

"...my name is Thomas, and I'm a recovering team captain." (Hi Thomas). I have been the captain of the Southern Chess team for almost four years. I didn't create the team, but took over when the previous captain had a fallout w/ Mike and quit the site. When I joined my team, I was only the 4th one. SC has grown 10 fold since, and for reasons I find interesting we have settled into an average number of about 45 members at any given time. My core group of Lunatics numbers around 15. Southern Chess has a strict policy about not taking team play too seriously, and I try to keep them involved with more progressively disturbing adventures (ie the whole Looneytown thing). I long ago quit caring about team score, as the sheer volume of ex team members led/leads to a bunch of losses (but don't get me started about ex team members - I tell everyone up front what they are getting into.....Southern Chess humor ain't for everybody  We usually average top 25 on the ladder for those that care, but I find this feature kinda silly as well, in the sense that the larger teams (100+ members) will always be at the very top due the law of large numbers. As an old timer (and every day player), I have seen this site grow by leaps and bounds. My Lifetime Membership was the wisest investment I've ever made. It's fair to say that I "know" most other captains from the older and/or larger teams. I don't post as much as I used to in the forums - I've found the whole 'deletion' thing a little unsavory - so I'm happy to get this new outlet (btw - for any new captains out there - if you need some help or advice but want it privately just message me). As a hard core GK player, I'm proud of a lot of things I've accomplished - in no particular order - : 1) 3rd place overall in GK #22, 2) about half of the top annotated games are mine, 3) top 10 in min-tourney points (a useless stat, but a good gauge of activity), 4) almost 9000 games played (top 10 or close to it), and 5) ZERO timeouts (only two players on this site have more games with no timeouts). The funny thing is - I would trade it all before I would give up my team. I just love it. When I got burned out on team play about a year ago (was it that long?), I got a co-captain. Having someone else to assign games is a HUGE benefit (also, as I love putting things in parentheses, be aware that alabamaboy and I both respond to messages and challenges from other captains (& co's) very quickly. I mention this because several of you have co captains we don't know yet, and challenges only state which team, not who specifically is sending the whatever). Anyway, as I can't remember what I was just thinking, I'll wrap it up in true Monty Python style but sticking a finger up my nose.

Hi, I'm the captain of the Hungarian Wanderers since august, 2007.I guess our Team is one of the oldest ones in GK , was founded by mazsola in july, 2004. He was a great captain, I'm trying to be half as good. When I started, didn't know how many talents are needed to manage. Now i know... My friend, be8ki is the co-captain, and also a strong player, much stronger than me.
Our team is very international, about 60 members from all over the world. The hungarians are about 50 %. We prefer longer (5-7 days/move) matches, but there's a few players who accept 3 d/m also.
This forum is a very good idea, hope most of the captains will join.

...
Hello. I am the captain of The Red Rook Foundation. I created this fine team back in 2004 and we are still going strong. We are a fighting chess team and will accept most challenges as long as they are fair. We have weekly/bi-weekly team newsletter and most of my teammates have been with the team since at least four years and because of their loyalty to the team, we have no timeout policy and closed membership, with the exception of a recommendation from a team member to bring a new player on board; however, we do monitor each other for severe timeout activity and account inactivity, which will result in immediate and permanent dismissal from the team. If a member does not have the time to play team matches due to school, work or any other personal matter in their lives, I do not assign team matches until my teammates are ready to play at their convenience.

Other than that, we have fun, learn as a team and continue to grow as a team in chess.

Good luck to all of you and your fine teams.

Respectfully

John

Co-captain of the 'Dangerous Toys'...
Since December 2007 -
The Dangerous Toys have been around for a while - founded by roxanol in the late 2004, taken over excellently by slavia at the end of 2005 - if my memory serves me right - after roxanol had left...

Captain of Team 256
Hello all....
The most often question I get asked is...what does your team name mean? Nothing too exciting, really....I used to be on the now defunct team "The Matrix" and was asked by some members to start a new team. And, well, we were the 256th team to be formed here on Gameknot

I look forward to discussing team issues with everyone, including time outs (we have a time out policy), getting people to be social (which is often like pulling teeth...via the internet, you can only force people to be so interactive with each other).

I have an unofficial co-captain: Br4inz.

Anyway, thanks for asking me to join

Captain of...
Hello to all, my name is Don and I am the captain of "Botvinnik's Blunder Busters." We only have three members but we still do pretty well against players of similar ratings. I have had a lot of fun playing team chess on Gameknot.com and hope to meet more friends/captains here in this forum.

Best of luck on all of your games!!

Captain of Boadicea's Army
One of our teammates, missgames, used to have a picture of Boudica (also spelled Boudicca, formerly better known as Boadicea) on her profile page, and I wanted her to be the first member, so I named it "Boadicea's Army". (missgames's friend andywitz was the first male teammate to be invited to join and is now our co-captain.)

I had a lot of ASCII art on the team page (you can see remnants of it on my profile page) but the ampersand-n-b-s-p-semicolons take up a lot of character space so I had to remove it.

I do not know how to get the most out of my team. What's it all about?

Thanx

Captain of Team San Miguel Knights
Have a good day to all captains & co-captains!

I am Nestor, captain of team San Miguel Knights since late months of 2003 and joined the team early months of the same year. Me and co-captain "gualvas" have joined gameknot late months of 2001 with lifetime memberships.
Our team SMK was created by then 'captain maykx', my good friend and godfather to her daughter, if not mistaken in the year 2002. The team is composed of an all-Filipino (or at least with Filipino blood line).
San Miguel is a famous name in the Philippines and many towns having the same names, same as of the biggest food and beverages company in the Philippines, incidentally, my native land too, San Miguel Town and the famous Saint Michael Arcangel.
The Team have a long list of former members. We prefers 5/7 days per move and 3 days/move for some.
The team represents career oriented and top notch professionals in various fields of business. SMK is one of the catalysts promoting and uplifting the development of chess in the Philippines.
The theme and principle of San Miguel Knights is "never never to lose to any opponents by timeouts".
Thanks and Best Regards To All!

Celtic Tigers
Hi,

I'm Beanie (Kevin), captain of the Celtic Tigers team. I started the team in July 2005 having played for the Dangerous Toys team for about a year before that. The team represents any Irish players, players with Irish connections, or anyone who has visited Ireland and has good memories of it. Drinking Guinness while playing, is desirable, but not essential to become a member.

Co-Captain Guardians of the Fortress
I see many familiar faces in this thread : ) Hello everyone my name is Ray and I am honored to be here. I am only recently a co-captain so I don't really know what my job is lol When I was captain my best friend Olie was just as much a captain of our team as me. That's what made us successful I think. We talked on the phone or saw each other everyday anyway and could talk about team issues and decide the best course of action. It also helped because as you all know running a team can be hard work so having 2 people instead of one was a great help. I regret that I didn't have the time to do those duties and we lost a lot of good people because of it, but I still believe we will be just fine under Linda's guidance and will return even better than we were : ) Thanks again for inviting me and I look forward to talking with old friends here again and meeting new ones : )

Team Alekhine
I'm Clark, the co-captain of Team Alekhine - one of the longer running
teams on GK (if I remember correctly, since November '03). I've been
helping out our terrific captain, Nima Tal, while he has been away.
Believe me, we're all hoping he'll be back soon!   I could really use
someone who is better with the computer than I am, to get our team
page functioning fully again - just as Brandy says, it's like pullling teeth
to get most people to be social. About half of our players are in the
1800-2100 range, so I'm particularly interested in setting up some
matches in that range, if you have 3-5 players who are interested.
Some of you I know and hope to get to know better - others I'm looking
forward to chatting with. Thanks, Linda, for getting this club going -
and Thomas for letting me know about it!

Mathematics Nerds
I'm Jason, captain of the Mathematics Nerds. I created the team on December 1, 2006. Before deciding on creating the team, I was a member of the Red, White, and Blue Chess team for a few months. My team currently has 57 players. I enjoy managing a team, but at times I do get burned out of constantly trying to find team matches. I need a co-captain!

Linda, thanks for creating the club. This is a nice idea for a club.

Team The Chessnuts
Hi there you captains!
Linda, thanks for your invitation to let me join and thanks for providing the opportunity to conversate with captains and co-captains about experiences we share.
My real name is, like stated in my profile; Hans Lammerts van Bueren
I'm captain of "the Chessnuts", a team i founded together with "metmen".
The teampolicy i try to communicate to my players is to ENJOY chess together as a team and to always play chess in a GENTLEMAN WAY.
I stress that enjoying chess is more important than winning a game, however i also stress that timeouts are unacceptable and are an insult to the team. Players who timeout more than once, and who do not communicate to me about the reason why, are kicked out of the team without regret.
For now i do not accept new teammembers. I want to keep the team small. In this way i feel i can be a good captain for my teamplayers and can give them the games they want rather fast. I feel a small team also helps for teambuilding and teamspirit. The Chessnuts is an international team with players i only partly know by person, but who i try to bind together to a team of friends who enjoy playing chess together as a team. I feel i am slowly getting the team were i want the team to be. Meanwhile i notice that my teampolicy results in quit good teamresults. I always call this "a nice side-effect from enjoying chess together as a team"

With chessnuttty greetings to all of you, Hans

Team Reality Check
Hi all, I am Maria, the undeserving captain of a fine group of (mostly) atheist and agnostic chess players: Team Reality Check. If you're curious you can read more on our team bio. gameknot.com In the past year and a half I've become better at running the team because some wonderful, helpful, friendly super-nice experienced captains gave me encouragement and advice. Thanks to you all (you know who you are).
Players who find team RC to their liking are welcome although I am not actively seeking members and prefer to keep the team a moderate size. Also the team rating and ladder holds only mild interest for me. Maybe it's a female view, certainly contrary to what a lot of teams strive for-- but I don't stress over my players winning or losing, and I don't want them to stress over it either...I prefer they just play their best and enjoy their games and make friends.
Yes, I agree that trying to make some people sociable online is a bit like pulling impacted teeth, still a few of my teammates have already forged friendships. It's not all about competition, it's also about "it's a small world after all". Through chess and chat. I, myself, have found friends here. I've also had some wonderfully enjoyable games with other captains and am humbly grateful for the camaraderie.
Lastly-- I have a great co-captain and am very thankful for his help...and....did I forget to mention that I think most other team captains are terrific? I didn't ? Are you sure? Maybe I should again, just in case I forgot?

Who is the Ravster?
...well, i don't know what to really say. my name is Ravi Sharma. i am 12 (13 in a month), and i am the captain of a quite new team called 'Ravster's Chessmates'. as i think you can tell, i am the founder of the team that was built on the 5th January 2008. I feel that i have raised a really great and friendly team that have reached 79th in the team ladder once, and i have a player that has a huge rating of 2041. i had once had some crisis that happened, which put me in a bad situation, but i managed to clear up the crisis, and the team is OK again

IPNS
hi everyone, good to see quite a few names i know on here... i'm captains of team It's Process Not Substance a team which I started about 4 years ago now. as i've read a few people say being a team captain is incredibly time consuming and takes a lot of organisation - and i couldn't agree more! maybe we should start charging our team members $10 a year membership - about time we got some payback right

of course having the co-captains feature is a great help for us, and it might help me concentrate on my own games more- down to 6-8 from 20+, not that it means much as my chess skills were about entertaining as a 2 week holiday in baghdad.

good to hear from you, speak soon.

Fritos Tab And Mountain Dew
Our true team captain is none other than the "CODE MONKEY" . Not the cartoon version. This was taken from the song CODE MONKEY by Jonathan Coulton. A brillant young tallant. But Fritos Tab And Mountain Dew, that is a line in the song. I once was captian of Team PAE. But got to big and to serious. Now we are just 8 or 9. We have only 2 former members and have all known one another for sevral years. Back to the days that we played with that long winded Tagg. Ya believe that guys intro? LOL Ive written thiesus shorter than that. LOL Just kidd'n I cant even spell thiesus ya can call home and ask my wife. But this is the way we see chess. I find team matches funner, and botom line thats all Im here for. Not ta be the next Caspar Weinberger. Just ta play some good ole laid back rocking chair chess. Yall have a good day.

Hello from the team captain - Vlad's Impalers!
Thank you for the letting me join your club!

I have had great pleasure of meeting a number of you! I have a great deal of respect for
anyone who can keep a group of international people focused on a common goal.
The United Nations has nothing on you!

- Vlad's Impalers -

Vlad's Impalers was started in June 2002, by the great "bishop_vlad"!

Our team founder, Vlad, was one of the players responsible for GameKnot team play.
The early pre-Impalers, are a part of the GameKnot team play history.

- Impalers play for Vlad -

It is my great honor to serve as a temporary team captain for the Impalers!
The Impalers wait for the return of our outstanding team captain, Vlad,
to return.

The Impaler team rules were established by the majority
of the Impalers. The Impalers are a close knit group and many were friends even before the
Impalers started in June of 2002.

team trojans
I'm Steve and a new captain of the Trojans... my experience with teams so far really empahsizes the need for captains and co-captains to be diligent and responsive. If you can't do the job then you have to pass it on and let the team know what is happening. I have had three captains self destruct now so I am beginning to wonder if it is me.

I was one of the founding members of the Guardians when a previous team suddenly collapsed and the captain disbanded it without warning. It is somewhat disconcerting to log on and find you are no longer part of a team. We had some great players with the Guardians and we logged a lot of games. I was over 600 games when the captain got busy and then suddenly went AWOL. Communication stopped and no team games were being accepted.

After a few months of langusihing I had to pull the pin and moved to the Trojans which was started by Driver who handed it off to Armegeddon. From what I have heard both did an exemplary job of running the team. After two months or so with Trojans Armegeddon needed to take some time off. He put it out to the team, everyone knew what was happening and I stepped into the position.

hmm... I see a nice collection of idlers here =)
Well, the history of my newborn team (Apr. 25, 2008), called -= The International =-, is rather interesting and funny. I came to GK last fall and in one of the private games I've been invited to the team The Football Funs. Well, I've joined it and was even promoted to co-captain. Our captain soccercrazy clearly indicated in the team info that timeouts are not excused. However, after some time I realized that all the team timeouts comes from him (about 60 in total). That made me really crazy and next day I left the team and founded -= The International =-. That's the story =)

In real life I'm 33 yo, PhD in Theoretical Physics, Associate Professor of UofT (currently Visiting Professor at PNU, South Korea), alcoholic, sportsmen, hard-smoker, philanderer, scrapper, and simply a cheery person.

My personal thanks to Linda for the invitation.
