Website takes dedication, but it's worth it!Anyone who is interested in starting a team website, get in touch with me. I have learned a lot from experience and can help with do's and don'ts. The question is really free vs paid. If you're going free, there is little point, as you usually don't have many options more than starting a GK club. However, if you're willing to pay a small annual fee for hosting, you can tailor a site to suit your needs as we have done. |

Time and money costObviously, the time cost is considerably more, given the quality of the site, but you get what you are prepared to devote to it. Initially, setup was easy enough. The tools are there to set up a great site, and at first I knew nothing about writing a website, though now I've learned a lot. The main challenge was actually the template - making sure the visual look of the site was good. After that it was a matter of choosing the correct components and modules. But once this is sorted, getting the team to register is a mixture of difficulties. You've got to provide a constantly updated site to give the appeal. Once all are registered it gets easier however. I don't send many team messages anymore on GK. The site is set up so team news is posted on the site, and generally a gentle reminder to visit the site on a regular basis keeps teammates visiting. There's also a forum and messaging system and player profiles (registered access only), so this is becoming the standard for team communication, particularly as it is arguably better than that provided by GK. It's set up similar to any social networking site. So for ongoing basis - now it's not much more than would be spent communicating with your team on GK. The extra time is usually spent on designing graphics. The key here is everyone does their part. Our Captain and Co-captains are all moderators/publishers and have the ability to post news, so the time is shared. It's really relatively simple once you get it set up. My key advice to anyone looking to do the same is 1. Choose the right host. I recommend stats.justhost.com as bandwidth, storage space etc (all you need to have a good site) is unlimited. You don't have to pay any extra if you overshoot your limits as there are none. 2. Use the latest Joomla! CMS. It is available for installation for free from your JustHost cPanel. Also, all the extras you will need are generally free. This is a bit of a project though, so anyone thinking of this, let me know as I can help a lot with advice. Joomla! is a Content Management System that will enable you to build and maintain your site with little or no web-building knowledge. 3. Once up and running, make your team website the main center for team communication. If you implement this policy properly, your site will indeed become the social platform for your team. |
