Team forums?
Do you use them? For example - how many threads have been made until now? We don't have more than ... 15... most of them with only a few messages.
What do you discuss?

...
Absolutely nothing, all my team players are mutes i think.

The only thing that we have used them for is to sign up for team tournaments.

I did start one, but found that the only person posting was me!! So I gave up on it.

same old .....
I started one before I was co-captain, when our captain was looking for a co-captain.
No one responded (30+ team members). Then I was told that everyone can read the posting, but only paying members can respond.

Sadly
My team forum is on life support. Just when it is about to die a post comes in and revives the forum.

My team forum currently has a total of 494 posts within about 30 threads.

I post team stats on the forum, announce new members, etc. There is "Math" discussion on the forum. (Math jokes, trivia, etc.)

We have one thread that has 264 posts on it. What my team did was play a game within the team, using Forsyth-Edwards Notation (fen). It worked out really good. Very good training and discussion. We recently just started out second "team game." The team votes on the next move.

I really like having the team forum.

Mine is fine
I have 1138 post and the forum is no older than 16 months - check it out : teambulgaria.s4.bizhat.com
here are a few tips I do to keep my players involved:
1. I organize them "best checkmate" concourse. Lower rated players love it. Nominations you can check out here: teambulgaria.s4.bizhat.com
2. Every month I post a report on the team performance.
3. Registration in the forum is mandatory. A new member must at least introduce and say "hi".
4. Organize polls and invite players to vote.
Good luck.

Team Forums
We have about 20 or so - What I like about them is that they are private to the team - and not public like the clubs are - which I think that it should be private - that's why it's a club!

I have about 4-5 players that use if frequently - and then it's usually me talking to myself.. hehehe

I do report on team games, where we rank etc... but that changes so darn fast. Within 5 minutes of me reporting we were in 1st Place, we dropped to 3rd.

Go figure...

I started a you know your addicted to chess when.. and that brought out a lot of funny stories...!

I did write up a time out policy - and it also became a place to address a fight to the end or just resign in your games... that was really interesting. Came up because I saw some of my players being harrassed for not resigning etc...

Anyways..

See ya out there!

Haven't had too much luck with the team forum
I agree most team members like to stay pretty mute. The forum's are used by a few people and my co-captain and I try to post new threads once in a while to keep up interest. You need to remember though, that unpaid team members can look, but not touch.

I like that thread 'you know you're addicted to chess when' I'll give it a try if you don't mind my stealing your idea.

Non paying members and the forums
I know that this has been done before, but I'm finding the fact that non paying members can't post in team forums to be really annoying. If they are allowed to join teams, why should they then be treated like some kind of second class citizen. What I think will happen is that teams will eventually make their own web sites which will get around the problem by replacing the forums and I fail to see how this will help gameknot in the long term.
Is anyone else interested in another united attack on the gameknot management over this one. I don't mind doing the correspondence but as a newbie perhaps it might be better coming from someone else, in which case, I'm quite willing for my name to be added to the list of folk complaining.
Please let me know what you think.

I find this too, it is annoying; in fact I was thinking these days of creating something like a website to replace the forum on GK, there are many free members in our team. I asked GK several times for different kinds of things, but I always get the same answer: that they will take this in consideration, and contacting GK to explain a matter has become harder, you have one line, which isn't much to explain what you have to say. I will also like to hear opinions on this and other team matters (available spots controlled by captains, preferences of the members - should be able to be set to zero.....). Maybe create a forum, ask them to read it or something? Opinions??

You can add my name in there, for what it's worth. It's another GK policy that I would like to see change, even if my team doesn't really utilize that forum at all.

MaCa.

There are talkers and 'non-talkers', but just for those who want it, it can be useful.....

Team members
I think our team players wants to play chess, and not to deal with the forums.
I am also captain of other teams from different chess sites, and it comes to the same result.

. . .
I agree with you, rilke, that most team members want to play games without participating in the forums.

@kingdawar This is off of topic.

I was wondering if you know if there is a way to start a mini-tournament, by invitation only, no points, and UN-RATED?

just set up a tournament - in the settings there is a link at the bottom suggesting no limits, no points and unrated etc. VOILA!!

@dj are you talking about the blue type >>Switch to "no points"/"no rating limits"<<

I believe those games are rated games, that is the setting I usually use for mini-tournaments for my team.

7. After withdrawing from a mini-tournament, you will still need to finish all games that have already been started for you (i.e. no active games will be cancelled). All remaining unstarted games will be recorded as lost in the mini-tournament table, but will not affect your rating and stats. The mini-tournament will still be marked as active until you finish the remaining games in progress (if any), or for the next 30 days (whichever occurs last), during which time it will count against the number of mini-tournaments you can participate in at the same time according to your membership.

The key phrase in the rule above >>but will not affect your rating and stats.<<

Leads me to believe they are rated games, all of my pasted team mini-tournaments have been rated.

What I want is an UN-RATED mini-tournament "switch"/"selection box", so especially for team tournaments among our selves, we can turn the games into teaching games, be able to make any and all comments on them in a forum setting, without worrying about violating rule
"3.You may not use chess engines nor chess computers to help you decide your next move. You may not consult with anyone nor ask for advice about any of your games in progress (nor provide such advice to other GameKnot players about their games in progress, whether solicited or not). You may analyze games with chess engines after they are finished. You may consult chess books or game/move databases at any time."
of the Rules of Conduct.
