Captain's Swiss
I'm running a 23 person Swiss on my team right now, and we are really into it. I was thinking of doing another one here with the captains. You guys interested? There are roughly eighty players in this club right now, and I figure if we can get 40 or so to participate we could run a seven round Swiss. I'll be happy to TD, though I would like to play as well. Of course, this will take some time to coordinate, so I wanted to start the ball rolling. To gauge interest, I am asking prospective players to sign in here. I'm setting the Fourth of July (7-04-08) as a tentative deadline for registration so I can re-elvauate the number of rounds needed. If you want a different tournament format for a change, I suggest you sign up!

Sign-up
And I wonder if there will be played several rounds simultaneously? (i.e. one first-round game could last six months while the others are finished within a month)

heinkat
just one round at a time ...I realize the potential for delayed play, and have an idea to curtail it, but first thing is gauging interest. ...if not many want to play then this whole thing is irrelevant......that's five so far.....c'mon you guys!!!!!!!!!!

No matter how many rounds.....
.....are deemed appropriate, this tourney will have a 3 day time control. As we are all captains, almost by definition we are active players on this site - so 3 days will hopefully accelerate what I'm hoping to be a 25+ player field. That's eight players so far.

ok guys...
....looking like it's gonna be a smaller field.....I'm cool with that.....I'm still calling 7-4-08 the deadline for registration. With the list at hand, we are looking at 3 rounds. I'd love to get more players so we can have more rounds.......

I'm interested
I would like to join, provided that there won't be more than one active game in this tournament at the time.

I think I'm fine with 3 days / move, but I would be more comfortable with something like 3 days + 1 day / move < 5 days, to give more room to play on weekends. As for the rounds, I think that if you're planning to play a Swiss tournament, 5 rounds is the minimum length to get a sensible result.

MaCa.

Captain's Swiss (Round 1)
1) This will be a 5 round event with 9 participants. There will be one forced bye worth 1 point every round. It will go to the player with the lowest score (tiebreaks by rating). In the event of a requested bye (worth .5 points) which leaves an even number of players, the full point bye will not be issued. I would like to discourage half point byes, but do understand that they are sometimes necessary.

2) Regardless of which player issues the 3 DAY CHALLENGE, the game must be entitled Captain's Swiss (Round 1), so that I may more easily access it from your profile (for verification purposes).

3) Pairings are issued using Accelerated Swiss rules, using rating avg. for the last 90 days as a benchmark.

4) Inevitably, something will go wrong. We chess players tend to be easily excitable when it comes to pairings, color assignments, etc....I will be operate totally in a transparent manner, but it's my sandbox and my toys. My decisions as TD are final.

5) PLEASE do not start games until I give the go ahead. As you OTB players can attest, re-pairings are frustrating and time consuming.

Here are the Round 1 pairings:

Board 1 - heinzkat vs. tekoahbaer
Board 2 - tag1153 vs. eqj2
Board 3 - maca vs. beanie
Board 4 - johnny1988 vs. usethepawn

ravster recieves the Round 1 bye

Remeber that white is listed on the left, black on the right. Please go ahead and issue/accept challenges. I need to receive a message from each of you that you are ready to roll. We will begin shortly.

The first round
Hi,

I have made a challenge to my opponent as requested. I take that it is the winner who is supposed to report the result to you, Tag, or the player with white pieces in a case of the draw?

Also, for the record, which Swiss algorithm are you using (Lim, Dutch or Dubov)?

Regards,
M_a_C_a.
