1st Inter-team Championship
Hello everybody.

The 1st Inter-Championship is under construction. I will post here to update group and result.

To all team captain. Don't get offended if I did not invite you and your team to participate. This is a try out tournament and if this one work you will all get invited to the next one

Format.

11 category of 9 persons each.
Each team will designate a champion in each category..

The category.
Below 1100
1100 to 1200
1200 to 1300
1300 to 1400
1400 to 1500
1500 to 1600
1600 to 1700
1700 to 1800
1800 to 1900
1900 to 2000
and finally above 2000.

Each category will play a mini-tournament. They will be ratted and mini points will be awarded.
Each player will try to win out their category.
When all categories will be play out. we will count all the mini-points that have been awarded.
The team with the most points will be declare the grand winner.

Special:
An extra 5 points will be awarded for the team who make a sweep in any category.
And 5 points will be deducted to the team who was swept in any category.

By popular demand the time control will be 5 days per moves.

Those rules are subject to change until the start of the tournament.
And suggestion will be appreciated.

Time control
Hi Jeremy,

Is it possible to get one more team for the test?
A 9-player mini-tournament takes approx 8 months to complete with 3d + 2d < 5d control (I can't imagine it would be much more (but not less) with 5d + 2d < 7d)

May I suggest 2 groups of 5 in each category at 3d + 1d < 5d control, with the winners of each playing in a head-to-head final within each category? This would also give a better idea of how a larger tournament would run... Each group is then likely to take only 4 months to complete...

Will update you with TF\/\/ players shortly.

Running a 3 days per move was my original idea. And I agree It will take longer that way.
But I have 12 players who requested at least 5 days per moves.
Because It is difficult to gather 1 person per category, i feel i didn't have a choice and go with 5 days.
But your 2 groups per category is a great idea. I will wait until I have more player sign up. (like your team)   and probably will change to 2 group.
What do you suggest for point reward for the team in the head to head match?

...
I'm not sure what the purpose of the points scoring is. It's confusing me slightly.
The head-to-head idea was to determine a champion in each category. Now I'm not sure...

I think it might be an idea to steer clear of using mini-tournaments to run this...

What I would suggest is setting up a draw into groups based on the teams involved, and using an established tournament format to run the tournament. Following this, the fixtures (team vs team) are announced, and team captains have the responsibility of playing these fixtures and publishing the score. Each fixture would then depend on the discussion between the captains arranging the fixture - obviously the more players involved the better chance of achieving a higher "goal difference". The fixtures would then count as team matches, but also have a bearing on the tournament.

It could easily be set up with 8, 16, 32, 64, 128 or even 256 teams. The problem is maintaining track of all the fixtures, which is easily accomplished with communication. It sounds overly complicated, but it's not - it just means that it needs to be done manually, and since there is a lot of manual work involved anyway, it might as well work this way until GK can come up with a solution to run something similar automatically.

What I'm trying to say is, that if I were Gameknot and I were setting up a tournament for teams, this is how I would set up the coding.

If you wished, you could even have each team nominate a maximum 15-player squad for the tournament, so then there would be enough for any match (max 10 players in a match) plus subs...

That's just my tuppence'orth, but whichever way you decide is fine.

I'm confused...
but that's okay...

what are you guys deciding to do?

...
That's up to Jeremy...

As I pointed out, I think there's difficulties with his proposal, but I believe it's worth testing it all the same.

If it doesn't work, then we at least have a backup!

This is not so difficult; just eleven mini-tournaments, 5+5<5 days per move, nine players per category. In the end all the mini-point scores are added to their team's total and the team with the most points wins the big prize.

...
No J.D. - in theory it's simple.
The problem is filling all the categories from a limited pool. Each team needs to enter 11 players.
That is fine for larger teams, provided there is interest.
However there's other restrictions also, including premium membership level of the players involved and the mini-tournaments they can play in. Even in my team of 80+ players, i've only got 5 available from those who expressed interest.

I wouldn't be so quick to say that running 11 concurrent mini-tournaments with restrictive criteria - in practice - is easy!

First thing you need to do is find 11 "hosts" to set up the various different mini-tournaments. Then give them the guidelines and lists of players. Instruct them not to proceed until their category is full however, as it's best not to start a mini-tournament you can't finish!

I Know it seems difficult.
But You can invite people without membership. Now you have put a lot of restriction on who can play and that's why it seems difficult. Instead of sending message to all the team. Try to send personal invitation.
Your team member will feel proud that he's been chosen to represent the team as a champion.
In any case The teams with more representative will have more chance to win than a team with only few members.

In any case the 1500 group is complete and ready to go

...
This isn't the problem Jeremy...

Players who don't have premium membership can only play in one mimi-tournament: gameknot.com

As my players need have at least one mini-tournament slot available at the beginning of January for TF\/\/MT 2009, I have no choice but to restrict who can join the inter-team tournament.

I'm sorry, but I owe this to my team.

Good work Jeremy. I know how much effort it is to set something like this up...
I hope all the participants have open mini-tournament slots, otherwise it'll slow things down.
But I'm really looking forward to this.

Advertising these tournaments
I enclose a message I have sent everyone in my team, which can used by any other team captain to help get these tournaments off the ground. Charles

Hello, team! Would any of you like to represent England in the Inter-team Championships? It is being organised by the "Club Captain" that I am a member of. The idea is this, players are in these categories,
Below 1100
1100 to 1200
1200 to 1300
1300 to 1400
1400 to 1500
1500 to 1600
1600 to 1700
1700 to 1800
1800 to 1900
1900 to 2000
and finally above 2000.
Then in each category you have a tournament, with a maximum of one player from each team. Please bear in mind that if you are a non-paying member of Gameknot, you can only play in one tournament at a time. Some of these Inter-team tournaments have vacancies, if anyone would like to represent us in them,-
1000 1100 Still waiting
1100 1200 missing 1 player
1200 1300 full and running
1300 1400 full but 2 pending
1500 1600 group 1 full but 2 pending
1500 1600 group 2 full but 2 pending
1600 1700 full but 5 pending.
1700 1800 Still waiting
1800 1900 3 spaces
1900 2000 missing 2 player 1 pending
Over 2000 1 missing 1 pending.
If anyone wants to join one of these tournaments, please let me know.
charleshiggie
19-Nov-08, 00:51

dynamic_dv(1800-1900) will represent England in the 1800-1900 tournament, and what is tyrin(1960) doing as a pending member for this tournament - tyrin should be playing in the 1900-2000 tournament surely? Is this a case of Britain rules the waves and the others waive the rules?
charleshiggie
19-Nov-08, 02:10

Another England Champion
grundnorm (1936) will represent England in the 1900-2000 tournament.
charleshiggie
19-Nov-08, 03:41

chesteruk(1252)
chesteruk(1252) would like to represent England in one of these tournaments. As the 1200-1300 tournament is full, can he play in the 1100-1200 tournament? I notice one of the players in that tournament is over 1200 anyway.
dynamic_dv

Tournament Points
Is there a reason why some of the tournaments set up and running are giving points and some aren't? I am confused!
