CHESS v Club Morphy- Two Knights Defense theme
CHESS, a ladder team competitor, has challenged Club Morphy to a consultation game. Several of Club Morphy's members have current or past ties to CHESS. Since CHESS issued the challenge, I chose the theme, Two Knights Defense (popular in 19th century chess play), and CHESS chose the option to play white.

This consultation game will begin on December 15th, 2009 with Club Morphy's 5th move in the following position. It is a very sharp gambit and filled with traps.

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Nf6 4. d4 exd4 5. Ng5 *

A couple of our members with current ties to CHESS will play for CHESS. Once the game starts they will not view this thread during the course of the game. I invite all members of Club Morphy to participate. We are currently 1-0 in consultation games against other clubs and I anticipate we will be 2-0 following this game. But I believe the real value in consultation games is the exchange of ideas and discussion, which for me is a fantastic learning opportunity; and I take this moment to thank everyone who has contributed to these games.

I would like to hear from members who are interested in playing but that's not necessary to participate in the consult game. It just lowers my anxiety a bit  ) Also, this is a very busy time of the year. Members who can't participate in all moves are not excluded. My idea, as with Bill's from CHESS, is to contribute and play when you can.

I'll post a couple of links on introductory material to the Two Knights Defense in a subsequent message on this thread.

Guidelines:
-The actual game board is set for a max of 10 day per move. But let's try to get a move posted within 3-4 days.
-Format is suggestion/discussion 2 days; voting 1 day. But we have to be flexible here. If the discussion totally supports a suggested move, there is no reason to call for a vote. A move will be entered on the consensus of the discussion. If more than one move is suggested/nominated, I will call for a vote for that move.
-There has been a question as to when to end suggestions/discussion and proceede to voting. So let's stick with 2 days for the discussion unless there is support for something else.
-I will suggest and participate in the discussions, but I'll vote only to break a deadlock/tie vote. Sort of like the President of the Senate (that's a skate job!!)

As always, I'm open to suggestions for improvement. Don't hesitate to share your thoughts/concerns with me. Hoping to see a pile of our members kick some CHESS butt  )

I can join, but I will be gone from the 23rd of December to the 2nd of January. I might be able to find access to a computer but I am not positive. It depends on if my father brings his "work" laptop from the office or not.

5. ... Ne5
I like 5. ... Ne5 at this juncture, although d5 is the mainline I believe.

5. ... Ne5
I'll go along with 5. ... Ne5 also.

Something different...
In the few games I've played in this opening, I've always gone with 5...d5. But, I'm interested in seeing something else. 5...Ne5 is a natural move.

5. ...Ne5: why not ?
hi all.
I don't know this opening at all. I 'feel' pawn in d5 sounds more natural but i suspect Ne5 could lead to more aggressive development so... why not try ? We're learning, above all.

Im a bit more conservative, d5!
I try to stick with the main line here, bob

5........Ne5
Definitely .......Ne5 here!

Club Morphy moves 5...Ne5
The discussion reflects majority agreement with 5...Ne5 so voting is waived.

6. ... Bb4+
6. ... Bb4+, followed by 7. Bd2 Bxd2 8. Nxd2 d6. Happy holidays, I will see you fellow Morphy members when I return from vacation.

move .....6
I think ......Nxc4 is best immediately. It deals with the hanging N, and takes away the B and N combo on f7 (though his Q will undoubtedly follow up with it).

If 6...Bb4+
then c3 7Bd6 and the d file pawn cant protect the knight on e5 so my choice is also Nxc4

Looks like 6. ... Nxc4 7. Qxc4 d5 might be the way to go.

6...Nxc4
I agree with 6...Nxc4 being the better move here. After 7.Qxc4 d5 should be considered.

Question on FEN postings
Is there a way to keep black at the bottom of the board when posting the FEN diagram?
cadavre-opa-
28-Dec-09, 16:36

Yeah, there is. Take the current FEN location: -

r1bqkb1r/pppp1ppp/5n2/6N1/2nQP3/8/PPP2PPP/RNB1K2R w KQkq -

This gives us the following board.

The last 4 letters are to do with castling. The letter before that is always either a "w" or a "b". To flip the board posted above to have black at the bottom, just change it to a b.

r1bqkb1r/pppp1ppp/5n2/6N1/2nQP3/8/PPP2PPP/RNB1K2R b KQkq -

Two Knights Defense theme
For those following this game this is The Perreux Variation which can arise from the Urusov Gambit & so far we are in the main line. Black must be precise to avoid incurring weaknesses.

7...d5
7...d5 8.exd5 Qxd5 9.Qe2+ is the main line in this variation. Black has 2 choices on move 9..., 9...Be7 & 9...Be6. After 9...Be7 the pin on the e-file can be trouble for Black but it has good chances.
9...Be6 can get complicated & lead to a queen exchange.

I also agree with d5 preventing mate
