The Best Next Move may Not be The Best MoveSo what can I say? Just this: The opening is about deployment. You can't win without deploying pieces in a way that build their value. As Botvinnik would say, the value of a piece is a function of its target and its trajectory -- in other words, its threat. And the sequencing of threats forms a plan. For me, chess is not about making the best next move, but the best sequence of moves. It is about choosing the best plan. |
