In what year did Owen Brennan move Brennan’s Restaurant from Bourbon Street
to its current 417 Royal Street location in the Paul Morphy House?

RE: Paul Morphy Trivia Challenge - The Answer
In 1955 Owen Brennan move Brennan’s Restaurant from Bourbon Street to its current location at 417 Royal Street in the Paul Morphy House.

"No trip to New Orleans would be complete without a visit to Brennan’s Restaurant, one of the top restaurants in New Orleans and the French Quarter, located at 417 Royal Street, New Orleans, Louisiana.

Brennan’s Restaurant had an unusual beginning. In 1946 Owen Edward Brennan, spurred on by a challenge from his good friend, Count Arnaud, who owned a very popular restaurant, challenged Owen to open his own restaurant when Owen was forever complaining about other restaurants. Count Arnaud told him that if he could do it better, than he should open up his own restaurant, and he did! He leased the Vieux Carre Restaurant on Bourbon Street, and promptly named the restaurant for himself, Owen Brennan’s French & Creole Restaurant, which later became known as Owen Brennan’s Vieux Carre.

Owen Brennan’s restaurant flourished; he created a new gastronomic experience, “Breakfast at Brennan’s”, to compete with “Dinner at Antoine’s”, after the Frances Parkinson Keyes’ publication, “Dinner at Antoine’s” was published. Since “Dinner at Antoine’s” was such a success, he figured New Orleans was ready for “Breakfast at Brennan’s”. When his landlord wanted to increase his rent, he moved his very successful restaurant to its present location on Royal Street in 1955. Brennan’s continued to prosper, despite Owen Brennan’s untimely death on November 4, 1955, at the age of 45 of a massive coronary. Despite the tragedy, the Brennan family kept the restaurant going, and today it is run by Owen Brennan’s sons, Pip, Jimmy, and Ted. Some of the dishes made world-famous at Brennan’s, include Bananas Foster and Eggs Hussarde, which combined the skill of Chef Paul Blange, and Owen’s careful scrutiny.

Although Brennan’s is famous for its “Breakfast at Brennan’s,” with a wine list of 65 pages, my husband and I had to try “Dinner at Brennan’s!” When you walk into Brennan’s you are transported to another era. 417 Royal Street is a very historic building that was built in 1795. From it’s beginning, it has played a role in many different lives. In 1804 it served as La Banque de la Louisiane. In 1820 it became the home of Martin Gordon, a clerk of the United States District Court, whose good friend, General Andrew Jackson, often visited his home for dinner. In 1841, Louisiana Judge Alonzo Morphy purchased the building. Judge Morphy was the father of the celebrated American chess player, Paul Morphy. In 1884, William Ratcliffe Irby, a member of the Board of Administrators at Tulane University, purchased the building from the Morphy heirs, and donated the historical structure to the University in 1920. In 1954, Owen leased the property from Tulane, and thirty years later the Brennan’s bought the landmark from Tulane University."

The Opera Game- upping the ante
In 1858 the Duke of Brunswick and Count Isouard invited Paul Morphy to the Opera and then requested him to play a game of chess there in the Duke's box. Morphy won the game in 17 moves and was able to attend to the opera without further distraction.

Let's up the ante. What was the name of the opera and theater where this game was played?

The Answer: What was the name of the opera and theater where this game was played?
According to another Gamkeknot player in the following article, the name of the opera was 'The Barber of Seville' and the theater was the Paris Theater:

"While on a chess playing tour in Europe, Paul Morphy took the night off and went to the Paris Theater to watch 'The Barber of Seville'. During an intermission, Count Isouard and the Duke of Brunswick (both accomplished amateurs) invited Morphy to their private box for a friendly game. What follows is a lesson on the art of the attack. 17 moves was all Morphy needed to send these two aristocrats packing. Enjoy " gameknot.com

Philidor's Defense
PM played the Philidor (C41 in ECO cataloging) nearly two dozen times during his career. There are interesting annotations of this game in Beim's "PM: A Modern Perspective," Del Rosario's "A First Book of Morphy," and Euwe and Nunn's "The Development of Chess Style."

Still researching this question, JC. That's a tough one(!) In the meantime: What is the address of the house presently for sale on Paul Morphy Street, in New Orleans, LA? Hint: the price of this property is listed at $289,000 (according to Real Estate Market info, the median home sale price in New Orleans is currently said to be $96,000).

PM Tivia Challenge
How about some basic rules? I used to play a form of this with kids while driving. The person who provides the answer to the posted question, gets to post the next question. The first person to 10 correct answers, wins the round.

So, let's forgoe my question of "What school did Paul Morphy attend in New Orleans, and what were their school hours?" The answer is Jefferson Academy (on the corner ofthe same block of PM's home on Royale Street) and the the hours were 8:30 am to 3 pm AND 4 pm to 6 pm. Things have sort of changed since then....

So cyna question of "What is the address of the house presently for sale on Paul Morphy Street, in New Orleans, LA?"

Let's get cracking. Morphy's street was Royale Street. And you don't even provide us with the real estate agency  ( Morphy home is now a restaurant. Is that restaurant for sale?
johnclark

House For Sale on Paul Morphy St., New Orleans, LA
QUESTION: What is the address of the house presently for sale on Paul Morphy Street, in New Orleans, LA?

ANSWER: 1634-36 Paul Morphy St., New Orleans, LA 70119

This property listed for $289,000 is a Multi-Family Home.

SOURCE: www.homefinder.com

I didn't even know there was a Paul Morphy Street in New Orleans, until now. I ran across this link accidentally, while searching for clues on the name of the school Morphy attended in New Orleans. All I could find re: name of his school was the University of Louisiana, but that is not located in New Orleans.

And now, back to you JC, it's your game. I'm afraid I haven't been following the rules on this trivia challenge's structure. Although I looked for the answer to your last trivia question, I could find nothing on the name of the school, nor the hours. And I'm out of fresh ideas for now... Meanwhile, we can all still dine at Brennan's Restaurant.

Pauline
Born December 1857 to Mr. and Mrs Charles H. Stanley. The purse of $100 was returned to Mrs. Stanley, as Charles would have drank it up. It was a 7 game match at $100 a side (about $2300 in todays currency). The first game of the match was on Nov 28, 1987, ending in a draw. Stanley resigned after 5 games with the score of Morphy 4 wins, 0 losses and 1 draw.

Paul Morphy Trivia Challenge
It has been written by a reputable source that, when a boy, Paul Morphy's father affectionately called him, at times, by the name of the greatest scientist who ever lived, saying: "My little ___________."

Question: What was this scientist's name, which Alonzo Morphy reportedly called his son, Paul?
johnclark
13-Aug-09, 16:10

Archimedes
That's a tough one! I remember reading something on that but have forgotten the source. It could even be the in the second or third chapter of Lawson's book. Anyway, I think that's answer.
cyna
14-Aug-09, 11:36

Archimedes is correct
The obviously proud Mr. Alonzo Morphy referred to young Paul as "My little Archimedes."

SOURCE: "The First and Last Days of Paul Morphy" by Constant Beauvais (pseudonym), aka Leona Queyrouse Beral. She was a friend of Paul, as well as a piano student of his mother, and a long-time neighbor who stated she lived two blocks away from him in the French Quarter. Curiously, she wrote of Paul shortly before he passed away that he could be seen strolling along Canal Street with his walking cane, drawing geometric patterns on the walkway with his stick and mumbling aloud to himself. I can imagine Paul may have been saying to invisible people, "Do Not Disturb My Circles!" as Archimedes stated while drawing circles in the sand with his stick, just before he was killed by Roman soldiers. For more info on Archimedes, click here: www.idsia.ch And, if anyone is interested in the above mentioned, unpublished manuscript by Constant Beauvais (aka Leona Queyrouse Beral) it is currently located in the Historic New Orleans Collection, 533 Royal Street, New Orleans, LA.
