Paul Morphy's Ancestral Heritage and Family Tree - Continued
This posting is in response to those blogs and other postings (made by unreliable sources), which are filled with wild speculations that Paul Morphy's grandmother, Modeste Blache, was a slave who was transported to America by Joseph Le Carpentier; who fell in love with her aboard ship, and subsequently married her. In light of this rumor, there have been other, equally wild statements made, that Paul Morphy must have been a "mulatto".

I dispute the reliability of the sources of these fables, as well as the validity of the purported information from which these distortions were born. I now open this fact-gathering thread for discussion; beginning with my own humble offering, developed in my quest for the truth about Paul Morphy's actual ancestral lineage and heritage, submitted below.

Firstly, in the New Orleans, Louisiana archives of land and other property records and deeds, both Modeste Blache and her brother inherited, owned, and bequeathed property to their own heirs. Ms. Blache actually owned property prior to her marriage to Mr. Le Carpentier. The historical maps of New Orleans show that she was owner of lot numbers 1201, 1205, 1211 and 1215 Royal Street, along with her brother, Charles Louis Blache.

Sadly, it is a known, true fact of history that slaves in America were not allowed to own property in the days before the Civil War. Considering the fact that Modeste Blache owned property; yet she died even before slaves were legally freed after the Civil War, it is not possible that she was a slave.

Secondly, the facts are that Modeste Blache was born and christened in New Orleans, Louisiana; she was not transported from elsewhere as a slave. Her date of birth is recorded as 7 Jul 1784 in New Orleans, Louisiana; she was christened on 4 Jun 1785 in New Orleans, Louisiana. She married Joseph Essau Le Carpentier on 16 Aug 1806 in New Orleans, Louisiana; and she died on 30 Sep 1840 in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Modeste Blache descends from a well-documented genealogy of French and Canadian ancestors, notably her paternal grandfather, Claude Blache, who was born in 1673 in Upaix, Dauphine, France, and his wife, also born in France; as well as Modeste's maternal grandfather, Louis Charles Blondeau, who was born on 7 Nov 1722 in Montréal, Québec, Canada, and whose wife was also born in Canada. There are some related lineages that spread from Ireland, into Spain, and elsewhere. Paul's maternal grandfather, Modeste's husband, Joseph le Carpentier, was himself born in St. Domingue, Haiti, according to the records. You'll need to take a look for yourself to see where they all originate and how they all tie together.

Regarding property ownership; it should also be noted that other Blache descendants inherited property in New Orleans, including the address located at 1217 Royal Street; this property was purchased in the year 1818, by the Govenor of Louisiana, Arnad Beauvais, from Jean Jacques Tournade de St. Coln and Mme. Felicite Blache Tournade.

The source of this information includes the public land records kept and available for reference in both hard copy and online, as well as related genealogy postings.
