The New GuyPete has graciously accepted me as a member of this group. Thanks again Pete. I'm really not that much of a 'joiner' here on GK (I've turned down about a dozen requests to join clubs and teams over the past few years). But, when I stumbled onto this club I realized I'd found something special. Anyway, Pete wants me to let you know what I have to offer. That's sort of funny since my original purpose in joining was to learn from all of you, not the other way around! But here's a little bit about my chess background, the opening systems I use and my teaching style. I'm a member of the USCF but no longer play in OTB tournaments (never any big tourneys within hundreds of miles of where I now live). I do remain active in their Correspondence Chess ranks (don't do postal ... just computer server games) and have an official rating there between 1600 - 1700. I play 1. d4 almost exclusively in competitive games ... although the game I'm playing with Pete has given me an appreciation for the Ruy Lopez' complexities. Wait and see if I try to pick that up. I'll probably stick with 1. d4 when Pete is watching just to give him something to 'adjust my thinking'. Against 1. e4 I play the Dragon when possible and I'm fairly well acquainted with most of the major 1. d4 defenses. My teaching style tries to focus on an ongoing exchange of ideas about possible moves (on both sides of the board) before either of us makes moves. I believe this give and take offers great opportunities to explore the richness of the game. I like to look at the 'big picture' of the position ... strategic decisions such as 'do I trade Queens?', 'should I defend here, or counter attack there?'. On the other hand, I'm just as at home helping someone understand why 'you might not want to put your Queen on the forward diagonal square of an enemy pawn'. I just love chess ... and I love to talk about it, and analyze it, and teach it and learn from it. And, I probably talk too much. I live at the beach. Every morning I practice Tai Chi in the sand at the water's edge and enjoy the universe. Then I check my games on the computer and contemplate the nature of chess. Life is good! I'm going for a beer!
