Another straightforward
Barely 20 seconds to solve it.
1.5 stars is ok

Not Very Obvious!
O/k, it's a given that the first move needs to be check but you still have to calculate which one of the two moves works, so certainly worth 2 stars. I'm pretty sure a lot of people tried the Qxh6 sac. first.
A little surprised the solved is quite so high.

@ paviland
With two black rooks controlling the 7th rank , it is not hard to realize that the q sac won't do much. I do agree with you that many people will be attempted by a Q sac particularly because the easy section has always been a Queen cemetery !

1 Star - nice puzzle
The Queen sac is ruled out fairly quickly, as it is clear that there is no possible mate with the two rooks, especially given the two black rooks on the seventh rank.

A question, perhaps someone can answer it. 4.Rxg8# is an alternate solution as far as I can tell, yet the puzzle engine does not accept it as such ...

I went back and tried the rook as the final move and it was accepted for me. Maybe your mouse slipped. I do agree that this is a 1 star puzzle, one of the easiest I've seen here in a while.

1.5 star puzzle. On another note, why are all/most of the puzzles submitted 6 years ago?

There are over 100,000 puzzles before yours in the queue

over 100000??
If they are over 100000 puzzles in the queue and they are only 2 published per day , it is going to take over a century for you to see yours. Simple calculation !! Just be patient folks, you might live 200 years like a turtle!!

I don't really understand why most are waiting for random puzzles to show up at the frontpage. As mbomb007 notices, the vast majority have already been available for many years via gameknot.com. You can sort and filter the columns in all sorts of ways

I hadn't actually sorted the puzzles by their different columns before, but I tried sorting by puzzle number. Solving the first puzzle ever posted (10% solve rate) was satisfying. It was also interesting to notice that several puzzle numbers are missing, and also cool that kingdawar has been here since the start.

Easy but...
Easy but essential!

This sort of mate occurs quite often. It's important to learn the various threats, including qh6-f8 mating ideas and black's defensive ideas such as Qe6-g8 which is insufficient this time but often ruins white's attack.

Alternate solution
My point regarding the "alternate solution" Rxg8# was not that it does not work, but the fact that it even exists. I was of the understanding that puzzles with alternate solutions are "busted" and not eligible for puzzle of the day. When I look at the "all moves graph" , it is not even listed as an alternate move, but when I try to enter it using the "alternate solution" menu, it tells me it has already been entered.

@morphman
Gameknot does not list every possible mating move from a specific position if it's the last move, nor can you enter them when creating a puzzle. It finds all mating moves within one move automatically, and there are usually so many they don't bother to add them to the all moves graph.
