Not so complicating...observe systematically
Black king cannot move or otherwise in check...only black moves available are by the f-pawn, rook and knight.

Let's look at the black pawn's move to f5. The only white move that can checkmate is the queen moving to c3 with black's escape square, e6, countered.

Bingo! Hence 1. Kd7...the other moves countering black's responses fall into place!

Not So Easy
Needed some thought - quite non-intuitive & I considered most other moves first before hitting on the correct one.
These are all the mates I could find..
1.Kd7 Nf5 ( 1...f5 2.Qc3# ) ( 1...Kf5 2.Kd6# ) ( 1...Kd4 2.Ke6# ) 2.Qc5#

Isn't the black rook completely superfluous?

Isn't the black rook completely superfluous?
It is there for a purpose...prevent the white king from going to the 6th rank...and to hinder its own king escaping to g6.

Not very hard, not very easy, but instructive. Thanks.

I loved this one!
It took me only a few moments to solve, which is normally not surprising for a 2-mover, but this was challenging!

I think I solved it by trying to find the most surprising move that actually does something. The key for me was finding a way to control the 6th rank.

Btw, the Black Rook is not superfluous at all as Black has several defenses linked to f5.

You wrote "...which is normally not surprising for a 2-mover", and I agree with your use of the adverb "normally". But I would like to know your opinion about this puzzle: puzzle #109555. Only one person solved it of twenty one who made the intent and it was rated "easy". I've really never understand this phenomenon. Could you try it and tell me if it is really as easy, as obvious?

Thanks in advance.

Wow!
I solved it!!!

That was incredibly difficult, as you probably knew. It's not often that a two-move wins a beauty prize in a puzzle competition (unless the category is 2-move mates).

It fully deserved the 1st Prize award. Even after I found the first move, Black had so many different options it took quite a while to make sure. That was a HARD puzzle!

The King is a piece?!
Yeah. Many players tend to forget this.

I don't, usually I consider the king with such few pieces...

but Kd7... is just too dubious to consider on even an analytical level...

Yeah .. Good idea block the white rook with the obtrusive king ..
The rook wasn't really doing anything was it .. I only realized this after considering how to activate the queen. Very counter-intuitive (unless you're alekhine or fischer).
