This puzzle brought my average number of incorrect moves WAY up! It's hard not to make any mistakes when the solution is that long...

Hahaha
Yeah, it's a long puzzle. Found the basics somewhere, don't remember. edited a bit so it would fit in this puzzle compiler.

it was fun

More Pawns
Not possible   The Puzzle Engine here couldn't handle more moves (trust me, I've tried)

yeah then there'd be like mate in 500 moves and with any luck someone would shoot me to put me out of my misery!

Again?
Kind of getting tired of the daily variations of this.

Once you figure out the pattern it's great to get into. Move 19 was hard for me and move 73 was also a nice move to find.

This should be the last variation there is in this collection   So I guess this will be the last one

Again.
Yesterday's puzzle was pretty much the exact same, same pattern of moves, just not as long.

too simple/boring
The pattern of using the pin on the lonely rook to force zugzwang in marching the pawns and letting the metaphorical hourglass drop more grains of sand is interesting at first, but is quite cliched by the half way point, a simplified version would have been nicer.

.........
I thought the 24 move daily puzzle a couple days back was a bit much. This one, not even going to bother.
1. The puzzle has no relation to a real game. Can't imagine having 7 pawns stacked up on the A and H files. Not even sure that would be possible. So what is the lesson? How do I apply it to a real game?? In my mind, I can't. But I'm a medium poor player.

2. 74 moves?? Seriously?? These are supposed to be puzzles, not entire games.

Longest "puzzle"
Now that endgame tablebases are easily available (all 6 piece endings are solved and online), this may be the longest "puzzle" 517 moves, Queen + Knight vs. Rook + Bishop + Knight so far. All possible 7 piece endgames may be available in a few years. Maybe there's a longer one lurking in there.

wow. schweet. now there's an official number for overkill. it's 517. and while we're on the topic of killing... i will not be responsible for my actions if someone posts a puzzle here from that abominable site posted so graciously by extremo!

It is kind of depressing when you ask for a hint an it says that it is a move with the queen.

Longest "puzzle"
Problem with the longest puzzle one is that the draw can be declared from moves 51 through 517 if I am not mistaken.

Ha
I'd hate to be black and running through a computer analysis of this one. Everything's going so smoothly, then probably a bunch of missed mates and finally:

Blunder: -Mate(74)

Wha?!?!?!?!?!?!?

What's the point of this puzzle? Besides increasing the wrong moves per puzzle statistic.

Congrats to the succesfull. Even if you figure out the pattern right away, it is a challenge to make the 74 moves correctly. The hand - eye mouse coordination requirement is significant.
