A more forcing and simpler continuation that I first thought of was rd3+ ke2 rc3+ then the opponents rook has to block, forcing mate after bishop takes on b5. More forcing by way of checking but it takes one move longer.

this was tough I tried everything, until I decided to try use the knight on g5 move it to e6 to block his top two corner squares which he uses to escape and then use rook to prevent escape on middle square and so i figured out the d rook was best to do it as the knight blocked the top dark square on the left and the bishop blocked the light square, wow so tough and challenging but loved it, I finally solved my first hard puzzle. very good teaches to use pieces to block escape routes before hand.

rd3 was also my first thought and then using suprise check but the rook got in the way and increase the number of moves to mate to 3.

What´s wrong with rd3+?
isn´t it checkmate?
King cannot go in e2 because of the bishop

Re: doubd
re_arturo, if the rook goes to d3, it blocks the bishop, opening e2 for the black king.

The key was the first move I looked at, but it was experience rather than genius. I've solved a lot of puzzles where the key move permits a piece to move, then shuts off its return. I didn't even see the more obvious threat until afterwards. So, I got the right answer almost instantly, but for the wrong reason! Probably don't deserve the point.

It's so tough because Ne6 is against all chess players common sense: it frees Be5 and only gives some extra influence on d4 and f4 - but you already have them! "Mate in 2 can't be very difficult", ha..... 4 stars. Only thing against this puzzle is that mate in 3 is very easy.

cool, I give it 4 stars also. Bravo!
Knights have really the ability to stretch your calculations, and it combines its abilities with the straight and diagonal vectors/directions... cool!

thanks guys :)
wow 4 years passed since I checked my puzzle.
Really enjoyed reading your comments guyz , i was thinking on adding some more unexpected puzzles in one of these days.
This puzzle was from the 1910's, during classes when i got really board i tried to solve them and this was the first one that i actually solved.
its kinda hard to read chess notations from these days, they wrote in a very different way as what we write nowadays.
