Fun problem. It certainly rewards those who look for the most forcing checks, since at every step Black has either one move, or his second move is mate in 1.

starts with Nf5 to finish with Rxg6
Very straightforward. The two knights will chase the black king all over the board giving the rook the opportunity to finalise the task
3 stars..

Long King-Walk
Fun to solve if a little repetitive. Tripped on one move because I wasn't paying attention, otherwise a case of making the most reasonable, checking moves.
Still had to give some thought on move 30, so gave this 3 stars

It's almost as if ...
... you could set up an original board and say white to mate in 31 ... it's the goal of every game ... fun problem, 4 stars just for the title "White to Mate in 31" ...

In the more common Hard Puzzles, usually it's composed by Mate in 2/3 problemsw, which hardest part is to find the 'quiet' moves which aren't easy to see, made only for compositions to receive several awards.

So, this Mate in 31 problem is actually a more easier problem than the usual Hard Puzzles that gameknot shows. Since it's a very long variation, we can always assume it starts with forcing moves, e.g checks or quite obvious moves that forces a only one response. The funny part is that the knights's manuever is only to force Black's king to take White's g6-pawn, and then make a simple mate in 2 with Black's king on g5 after 30.Rg8+ Bg6 31.Rxg6#.

P.S: ebutaljib, I suppose the annoying part on mrfery is his insistance on judge every puzzle, with sometimes uncomprehensible methods, isn't it?

Annoing
I disliked this challenge, very ingenious, but you can't learn something usefull with it. The only one that can learn something with this puzzle was the guy that built it.

mrfery's mate in 292 puzzle
Hey mrfery, that position is illegal. Black's missing only 4 pieces(2 bishops + 2 rooks), however White's pawns have made at least 8 captures: f2xg3xh4, d2xe3xf4xg5, and b3xc4xd5xe6, which gives 2+3+3=8 pawn captures, making the position completely illegal.

fantasy puzzle
This puzzle had been published in different sites amongst them the very respected Susan Polgar blogs site. The position might be illegal but the whole idea is the fertile imagination of the compose back in 19th century. ...

Maybe Sisysphus could...
Game Knot has some limit to the number of half-moves a puzzle can have in it's solution tree (i.e. all moves graph). I remember estimating it at ~1600 half-moves, and a mate in 292 has 583 half-moves in the main line alone. If it's not forcing checks all the way, but has a recurring quite move every so often (based on my current attempt to solve it), with a substantial alternative from black *cough* Nh6! it easily gains the other 1000 half-moves and then some.
I for one don't want to suggest kingdawar or anyone really, enter 1599 half moves (well the compute enters half so 800) then find it is not post-able.

I could be entirely on the wrong track with this thing, in which case it might be post-able.

Both positions are illegal due to black having all his pieces and white having required a capture.

Wrong diagram
The position is illegal because it's the wrong diagram. For people who care about such things I have just posted puzzle #266975 as it is given on the bottom of this page www.arves.org. Instead of blocking b4 by a black pawn, it's covered by a white pawn on a3.

visualizing
There is no way I was even going to try to visualize and remember 31 moves in my head. Too much work. So, knowing every move had to be a check because black has spite checks, I just looked for a check where I could follow up with another on the next move. I got lazy and made a couple of mistakes.
