Right idea, wrong set-up
The idea with Legal's mate only works under the right conditions... If black has the knight developed on c6, then he should've captured white's knight on e5 with his own, (rather than taking the queen), and then black is winning.
e.g.
1. e4 e5
2. Nf3 d6
3. Bc4 Bg4
4. Nc3 Nc6
5. Nxe5 Nxe5
6. Be2 Bxe2
7. Qxe2

If Black had played a more passive move, then Legal's mate becomes a real possibility:
1. e4 e5
2. Nf3 d6
3. Bc4 Bg4
4. Nc3 h6
5. Nxe5 Bxd1
6. Bxf7+ Ke7
7. Nd5#

and then if 5...dxe5, then 6.Qxg4, and white is a solid pawn up.

I remember being taken like this in a blitz game... clever.

There have been posted at least a dozen versions of this position in the GameKnot section. This exact position shown here could have been reached after many plausible move variations, i.e.

1. e3 e5 2. e4 Nc6 3. Nf3 d6 4. Bc4 Bg4 5. Nc3 Bh5 6. Nxe5 Bxd1

And we have the position shown in this exercise.

Connu mais génial
Facile à voir une fois connu, mais il fallait le trouver, à l'origine.
