The king and queen both offer black "defense," so getting either one of them to move aside allows white's queen to mate.

Ha thanks : ) I hadn't thought of the King in terms of defence as well as target. Interesting.
I mean, I know the King can be a powerful piece in his own right, but this description here threw me for a while.

Maybe a better way to say it diverting (or attracting) either the king or queen, as one of them must move and allow mate on f7 or h7. Nice self-blocking element after 1...Qxh8 2. Qf7#. The rook guards h8 in the diagram, but after giving away the rook to the queen, the rook is no longer needed (which is true after 1...Kxh8 2. Qh7# too).
