oh , now I can see stalemate.
1.e8=Q leads to ... d1=N+
2.Kg3 Ne3
3.Qxe3 stalemate .

I am just playing alone.

Well luckily I played e8=R on reflex. I didn't even see the stalemate, its just that I always underpromote when I can.

@thereaper1 ...
Why do you do that? I'm curious.

Well It's just more pleasing to underpromote if it achieves the same thing. As well as that alot of chess puzzles are designed for underpromotion anyway so why not?

4 Star Difficulty, 5 Star puzzle!
This is NOT easy!

There is only one way for White to mate in 4. 1.e8(Q) doesn't work, and neither does 1.Ke2. This is a brilliant puzzle!

Can't be a 4 star difficulty ...
... because I managed to finish it. But it is good, I love the way it involves under-promotion on both sides.

Novice ?
I've been under the impression that a Queen can do anything a Rook can do. So why is it that a Rook is able to mate in 4 but not the Queen? Is there a rule I'm not aware of? What am I missing?

Thx.

In the line 1.e8Q d1N+, after 2. Kg3, there is no mate after 2... Ne3 as the knight cannot be taken due to stalemate. On the other hand, after the rook promotion, the knight can be taken because it would no longer be stalemate.

4 star difficulty
Sicknero, did you solve it on your first try? If you did, then kudos! If you took more than one try to get it, you help to prove my point that it really was difficult. It certainly wasn't "easy".

Lol no....
I tried Queen first of course. And I didn't see Black's promotion to Knight at all, until out of curiosity I tried entering P=Q as an alternative solution.

...
... the puzzle being labelled "Understatement" is a clear pointer of course. And yet I'm pretty sure I still tried Q=P first. Duh : )

Gameknot says i can't create puzzles unless i have completed 5 rated games waaaaaaaaaa. This puzzle was cool though. Force an underpromotion epic.
