Nice one
I think that's a very good puzzle for beginners. Don't recall having seen it done so elegantly before. Good that you have some "superfluous" pieces.

Didn't care for this one
Would have been a ton of "This is stupid" if a certain number of pieces were removed (let's say that number is in the range of 4-6).

Would certainly
have been stupid if 6 pieces had been removed.

I know
I'm just fuzzy on what qualifies on "too much help" in a comment, so why not extend the range out that way, eh?

Good minimal...
Nice easy minimalist puzzle for those starting out but what the hell is the knight doing there? Minimalist puzzles don't waste either space or pieces..

There are no rules to creating puzzles.

i think the extra pieces are there for distractions

this is a good example of what i call "herding." everything here is useful, maybe not directly to the solution but to thinking about the solution. like thor99 said, the extra pieces can be thought of as distractions which only means that you have to put more thought into the puzzle, thus making it slightly more difficult. those pieces can have their uses evaluated, which is a useful skill in real games. as for the solution, there is one bit of abstract chess thinking involved which is also good to have practice in.
