what if white pulls the rook up instead of the pawn to block the check? that would throw a loop into a checkmate in 5 wouldn't it?

Nicely formulated paldan84, but you can see via the "All moves graph..." located under "Options" that that will lead to mate in 4 instead of 5

so, then why isn't the puzzle labeled 'black to move mate in 4' seeing it's a forced checkmate by moving the rook instead of the pawn first? You can easily make up all kinds of puzzles if your goal isn't to checkmate in the least amount of moves.

the fact that white could move the rook, doesn't mean he has to
whites intent is to prevent checkmate for as long as possible, so it moves the pawn instead of the rook to delay it
