Is the Rook at A8 supposed to be there?
What is to stop Black from taking the White queen with his rook?

The Rook in A8 can not take the queen at A4
Because if it does you can go to c8 with you pawn and it is checkmate

to grog75
Then there would be checkmate in two moves: the pawn at c7 would turn to Queen with a checkmate (it is safe to do for the black bishop cannot be moved because of the Rook at e2)

en passant
Nice example of the power of en passant... a pretty checkmate.

Medium Difficulty, Not Hard
Why does a 3 star puzzle have a 16% solve rate? Black's Bishop and a-Rook are glaringly vulnerable.

@tonnerre
medium difficulty for those who solve not just for those who attempt.
I myself find it to be a 5 because I could not see the queen move to A4 where she could be taken by the rook. I also missed the en passant reopening the queen attack on the king.

I wish I could readily see the vulnerability of Black's rook. That was a helpful comment and I will try to look for that in the future.

It was simple.
If i could do it without using hint too easy.

Almost missed the en passant!
Even though I had solved this before (I had it rated 3 stars), I got stuck, even though I saw the winning key move pretty quickly. It took me awhile to see the en passant capture after 1...b5! (which the computer played against me).
