Can be solved in 3 moves:
Knight in e2
Then tower in b1
and knight in f2 for checkmates

No, because the white rook would then check on a8, the king would be forced to go to g7, where he'd get checked again by the dark-squared bishop, and after blocking the check or moving, he'd get checked at least two more times, which would mean that the mate would take more than the three moves you suggested. Also the rook to b1 means the g pawn can now move, allowing the king to escape even without the checks I suggested earlier.

Korchnoi-Karpov
Looks like a bit like the finale of a famous Korchnoi-Karpov game, WC 1978 in Baguio City. Karpov delivered a similar mate in a hopeless ending. Any other oldtimers who remember this?

The nearest position I've found correspond to the 17th game of this match.

Korchnoi resigns after Nf3+

Hope that helps
