how do you know who composed every puzzle? Do you just recognise a puzzle and instantly know who composed it?

easy peasy
I search for the names on the worldwide web.

That seems a lot more reasonable than just knowing who composed it.

Not being able to solve this puzzle doesn't mean you suck. How often do you think you're going to find this position in a real game? It matters more that you know what to do in real game situations. And your rating is higher than mine, so I assume you know how to play the game better than I do.

I still loved this puzzle, even though it probably didn't come from a real game.

One thing I see a lot that I don't understand . . . why would you "bishop" your pawn rather than queening it?

Generally, choosing a bishop instead of a queen is due to stalemate considerations. Here is a simple example:

The only way White can mate in two moves is by promoting to a bishop, as a queen or rook would stalemate Black.

The defender can also promote to a bishop to try and set up a stalemate. Here's an example:

White can mate in three after 1.h8Q a1Q 2.Qg7 (among other moves), but after 1...a1B Black prevents this line due to stalemate.

In the present puzzle, however, the bishop promotion is a product of the GameKnot puzzle program. Any Black defense that leads to mate in seven will be chosen at random, and it happens that promoting to a bishop is one of these. I got the queen promotion myself when solving it.
