White rook at d5!?
The white rook at d5 is pivotal to solving this puzzle( at least that's what i thought at first). First of all it can be captured by the king and is needed to guard the other two pieces. sorry but that analysis is totally wrong and will miss lead you. The first important thing you need to notice is that the white rook is on a cruel a2 to g8 diagonal. Hence you should then immediately see that the queen and bishop attack this diagonal from opposite ends which indirectly defends the white rook because black can't take the rook because he then gets mated with bishop to b3. So with this revelation we move on to our next problem. I can't play queen to g8 because I free up a flight square for the black king. So what is the correct setup move to this puzzle. well i was very tempted too move the rook to safety and then check with knight to c5 or d8 but black simply plays either knight to d5 or queen to d5 and all this does is allow the king to capture on d6 when I finally check him with my knight. Thus moving the rook is wrong. So the only piece left to move that doesn't compromise my position is the knight at e5. The question is where? After using process of elimination knight to d3 is the setup move. Why first of all by moving the knight, the f5 square is now covered by the rook. Second this now creates a mate threat at g8 and third this isn't the only mate threat available, there is also knight to c5 mate. Fourth the mate threats don't need the same conditions to work. Thus black needs two moves to stop both threats but only has one move to make thus he is in a classic zugzwang. Nice puzzle, but it can be solved reasonably easily with process of elimination. Thanks for the puzzle nonetheless!
