compare with puzzle #50414 and puzzle #50412 (and I'm still trying one with a rook on e8) to find out some solution like Loyd's first thought (Nf5 with a mate in 6), see the external link to the source of my idea timkr.home.xs4all.nl, up until now without the rook is the closer to Loyd's first solution!

here is the extract from timkr.home.xs4all.nl:

"However, as Loyd himself mentioned, 24.Qe6 was not really played. Instead, he announced a mate in 6, beginning with 24.Nf5+. Only a quarter of a century later, did he "announce a mate more in accordance with the modern preference for problems in a few moves," with Qe6."

Not too hard
Few minutes for the first move but not very hard compared to other problems bh Mr.Lloyd.
3 stars is enough

misterkool, based on the citation this is not a problem by Loyd, but one his games.

So Loyd found the mate in three after 25 years. That's why they started using chess clocks.

why can't the queen be taken with the knight?

I didn't solve it.
Kingdawar, I really think you made a mistake by placing this problem in the easy league. 12% is even high I think. And forced checkmate in a few more moves is rather easy.

Some automated algorithm picks two puzzles each day, and puts the one with the highest solve rate on the left of the page, under the message header "Easy daily puzzle".

That's interesting: the puzzles are chosen by an algorithm. Is there no one who assess the outcome?

Why not Nf5 and # by R with K escape to g8 prevented by Q? Therefore mate in 1.

Rh6
Because of the answer Rh6.

Algorithm
Sounds to me like the algorithm that selects the puzzles should be adjusted to pick two puzzles, each with a solve rate within a range of percentages. Then you could ensure the "easy" puzzle always has a solve rate > 40%, and a hard one always < 40%, (or some other percentage).

Reply from Gameknot:
"The information posted by kingdawar is not entirely correct. The daily easy puzzle is picked from all puzzles rated 2 or 3 stars and the hard puzzle from all puzzles rated 4 or 5 stars, using a proprietary selection algorithm we have developed, so it is not entirely random. One a puzzle is picked and placed on the front page, its rating can change quite a bit, so the easy/hard puzzles are not guaranteed to stay 2-3 and 4-5 stars. The solve rate is shown, but is not used in determining whether the puzzle is easy or hard."

The key move just kind of jumps out at you, doesn't it?

Nice, but watch out!
I thought I had it with Qe4 but failed to notice the Bishop poised to take my Rook. After that, I saw that the only solution involved blocking the Bishop at e6. The rest was easy but I think the key move makes this a moderately difficult puzzle.
