depending on blacks move this could be a hard puzzle...

first one is tough but if you get certain moves by black this is very easy

Tough first move!
Try solving the puzzle completely without moving any pieces. Then you'll appreciate why the first move is so important.

I spent ~3 minutes on this one, which is a fair bit of time for a 2-mover. Nice!

If you want to do this thing right, you solve for all second move scenarios already on the first move.

Can someone tell my why black can't just simply rook to e3 to prevent this mate?

@ talkvei
Simple, because black doesn't have a rook on the e-file or the 3-rank, and therefore can't possibly move a rook to e3.

If you're referring to the bxe3, then check out the moves list once the puzzle is solved and you'll see...

1 Be3 Bxe3
2 Qd1#

Actually, this would still be mate, even if black had a rook on e3.

Oh, I meant black rook to d3, taking whites rook, protecting his king from the mate and making himself able to take whites bishop/rook in the next move. Kind of a good move, no?

dear taikvei,

When black rook captures white rook, it denies the black king that d3 square to escape to when white Rf2+..thus mate!

I thought Bd1 would work...
...but Alternative Solutions played 1...Bd2, which cuts d3R off from 2. Qd1+, then 2. Nf4+...B×f4, 3. Qd1# is too many moves.

So, the winner is 1. Bd3.
• It's counterintuitive to place your Bishop in between your 2 Rooks, but here it is, for reals!

129/930 = 13% ~ bharathiraja -- you've collected some fascinating stuff, here!

vachess2 ---> Incorrect....
Dear vachess2 -- you wrote:
"Queen to e4 and f3 to f1 is also mate in two moves.."

By "f3 to f1" you're not implying Pawn moves, so it must mean f3Rf1, that is, "Rook @ f3 moves to f1." Proceeding from this presumption, you've left out one move, namely,
1. Qe4+...Be3 (you've failed to allow Blk's response),
2. Q×e3+ (missing move)...Kd1,
3. Rf1#

So, it's not #2, but #3: too many moves.
