silly question
If the first move it 1.Qc2...
1. Qc2 Qf8+
2. gxf8=R#
or
1. Qc2 Qxg7
2. e5#
or
1. Qc2 Qxg7
2. Bxg7#

Where am I doing this wrong, please?
Thanks, everyone!

Queen sac
To the above question ,you have to first look at all blacks possible responses, queen c2 does not work due to the g5 pawn advancing to g4 for black making a flight square on the dark squares ,when queen on c2 controls light squares, hope that helps.

Interesting Zugzwang
I think it becomes apparent quite soon that the queen needs to be positioned where it can exploit Black's lack of available moves but to which square? When you see the snag of 1..g4, you should also see that the queen has to remain on the c1-h6 diagonal, then it all comes together.

@playspiel re variant, promotions.
It's not a real variant; it doesn't matter what you promote to on that line of play. In real life, I would just announce checkmate without promoting. A Knight is only necessary after 1. Qe3 Qh7 (because the Bishop might be captured).

Supposedly, in very archaic versions of chess, the pawns did not get promoted. Instead, they just sat there cluttering things up, like sullen driftwood.

Nice theme....
I knew Hermaj was the key but it took me a while to figure out the complete sequence....promotion with a check...good one..not at all obvious and a real collection of moves...
