but you are still down 2, whereas with the other you are down only 1. When you are down, you don't want to trade pieces.

Value of pieces
A Knight (3) for a Queen (9) has a net difference of 6 points whereas a Queen for a Rook (5) & Queen has a net difference of 5 points. The object is to gain maximum advantage, ie 6 is better than 5.
