Missing something
OK, why 2. Qxe8+? What am I missing that Black has to sacrifice the Q?

To prevent mate. The threat of Qxf4+ is too much. The knight can't be protected by the g-pawn, and if white moves it, Qxf5+ accomplishes the same things.
