another irritating and unsatisfying problem, or am I wrong?
My first thought here was 2 ... Rf3. "Computer says no". But why I thought? Was it because White has the option of exchanging queen for rook and fighting to hold draw. So that affected my later thinking, because I saw the obvious 4 ... h5 and ruled it out because this also gives White the same option by simply Q takes g5+. I wasn't entirely convinced by defence 3. R takes e4. Why not Qd1? The best? Not convinced. If anyone can offer some clarity on this one I would be most grateful.

No. It's because it allows Ra2. I think that was just a case of me tilting somewhat. Probably tired after solving the previous problem which only 20 per cent managed to solve. Exhaustion has that effect. But Qd1 is still of interest.

I'm not sure I follow you as far as move order. Is this right?

2.g3 Rc2
3.Qd1 Rxf2+
4.Kg1 Qxg3+
5.Kh1 Qg2#

Not sure why White would play 4.Kg1 providing mate, instead of Kh1 avoiding it.

Yes, you're right. After 4.Kh1 Qxg3 5.Qd7+ it looks drawish.
