Alternative?
After Rxg2+, the white king can go to h1. Black is mate minus one, so the least he loses the rook... if Rh2+, KxR, and black still has to defend the mate.

If White's King moves to h1, Black plays Rxg6 and White's mating attack falls apart and he'll lose the knight with check.
