Can't see why....
Someone able to tell me why White queen takes black rook? I can see White Qf7 eventully leads to mate but why isn't White Qc1 a better option?

Okay, say the white queen mores to a safe square.

1. Qc4 Rd4
2. Qb5 Qxg4+
3. Kg2 Rd2+

And white cannot avoid checkmate.

Thanks for replying but....?
4. How about White queen can move to f1 to spoil checkmate?

And QC1 stops it too ( unless I'm not going far enough ahead or i'm missing something)

Are you why the queen doesn't move to f1 on the second move or the fourth move of the continuation I provided? In the former case:
1. Qc4 Rd4
2. Qf1 Qxf1+
3. Kh4 Rxg4+
4. Kxh5 Qh3+
5. Bh4 Qxh4#

The latter case is impossible, since white is in check after black's move three.

As for 2. Qc1

1. Qc4 Rd4
2. Qc1 Qxg4+
3. Kg2 Qe2+
and either
4. Kg1 Rd1+
5. Qxd1 Qxd1+
and white loses the queen anyway.
or
4. Kh3 Rh4+
5. ... Qg4#

Thanks for the 2. Qc1 threads - they make sense. How about the following options for black?

1. Qc4 Rd4
2. Qb5 Qxg4+
3. Kg2 Rd2+
4. Kg1 Qd1+
5. Qf1 .......

or

4. Kg1 Rd1+
5. Kg2 Qe4+ or 5. Kg2
6. Kh3 ......
